Peace Dollar - Opinions Requested

This is one that caught my eye, and I believe the seller is a Forum Member here. The sellers opinion of the coin is listed in the auction, but I'd like to get other opinions as to possible grade.

For me I think it looks a solid (PCGS) MS64, although Peace Dollars are not something that I've had too much exposure to seeing a lot of.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Very hard to tell from those pictures, but the two heavy marks on the eagle's wing are telling me this probably isn't a 64.

There is something else pretty cool about the picture, though. Some years ago, David Lange wrote an article about the strngthening of the word GOD on the obverse of the 1926 master die, which he proposed could have been an engraver reaction to the Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925. The lighting on this picture really makes it, as well as the 26, stand out.

Common date with a weak strike (no better than a 63).

It's nice looking, no fingerprints, no heavy or excessive marks that I see. May just be the picture but the strike looks a little weak. Little bit of dip retone on right side of obv. MS-64 max.

Tough to tell from these photos, but I'll give it a shot.

Oddly the reverse looks a lot more baggy than the obverse. The obverse looks very clean. Late die state, with frosty lustre. Some strike weakness is evident though it's not too bad. A very nice, clean Peace dollar. MS64 high end or MS65 low end. I'm tending toward MS64 though due to the baggy reverse.

Indeed, it's pretty cool that GOD is strengthened on the 1926 dollars. However, that word is really weak on most 1925 dollars, so the strengthening might also have been simply in effort to correct that problem. However, you'd think they'd have strengthened all the words in the motto, too.

    Monkeys!

the coin in question looks like a decent 64 from here, super clean obverse probably grades 65, the reverse 64 probably holding it back.

I would agree with what has been said so far. Looks like a nice clean coin. A slightly weak strike but that it common to these. Could be a 63 or 64, hard to say from the pictures.

Thank you for the opinions and for helping me learn something new. That's really interesting on the die work done on these. The "GOD" really does shout out in the picture.

    My thoughts are running:

    PRO's

    1) I don't have this one yet.
    2) The obverse is just so clean and appealing to me.
    3) The seller might be understating Grade in auction which might keep the price down
    4) Seller is someone here and I wouldn't have to worry about dealing with an unknown

    CON

    1) I'd really like to get into a PCGS MS64 and the only thing that worries me is the 2 hits on the wing would keep it below that.

I'll take a stab at it and see what happens.

    Thanks again,

PS. No I won't post a link too many sharks in the water image

Just because someone is a member here does not mean you can trust them. Personally, if you want the coin in a PCGS MS64 holder and you are self-described as not that familiar with the series then put your wallet away and buy one that is slabbed.

looks like the digi-pic is a scan so i'll guess it has a good shot to be ms-65

Obverse looks 64-65, reverse looks 63-64. I would say you have a good chance at a 64.
