Best Binder storage...

Do you store them standing up (like books), or laying down on their sides?

I've always worried that binders that stand up for long enough will cause the pages (and cards) to start to bend and curve. Plus, the top row of cards on all the pages would catch what ever dust, hair, etc that might come down (since they're virturally exposed to the air).

I notice that MJ Roop has some nice slipcovers for their binders. Are they just regular d-ring binders with custom slips, or are they specially designed?

Are there any good and cheaper MJ Roop knockoffs out there? $40 for a binder (and no pages) to display something like a $50 1985 Topps Football set is kinda crazy.

roop just gets them from Light Impressions and marks them up. It's a few dollars cheaper there, and they ship when you place the order, but binders and slipcases in general aren't cheap.
I've never had a problem with standing them upright as long as it is the right size binder for the number of pages. And using a solid opening and closing page on a d-ring binder helps a lot.
If the book case shelf they are stored in doesn't have a lot of space above the binders you shouldn't have too much problem with dust. How much flying hair do you have in your house image

I was always told you're supposed to store binders flat. And on a related note, are there any bookcase like things that are specially designed for holding binders?

Thats a god idea! Seems that would cause less "stress" on cards and pages.

That's a good idea. Does it take up more space that way?

I learned in the scrapbooking world to store your binders/books standing upright so the pages dont compress and stick among other things not related to cards.

  • I've always had my binders upright and the only ones I've ever had "buckling pages" with are ones where the binder is not filled sufficiently. On the few that I have now that do not have enough pages to properly stand up, I use sheets of 1" thick foam cut to the size of the pages, as a "filler".

I've tried them laying flat, but I find that over time, pages stick together a little. Leaving them upright, or even with the spine at top, will allow the cards and pages to "breathe".
