New Buffalo- guess the grade!

Ok, so I sold my grandchildren into slavery, but they won't mind when they see that I did it to buy this:

This coin has the absolute fullest strike I have seen on a 17S, and has luster to spare! I'll keep the grade a secret (for a while anyway) for those who like to play the guessing game.

    Wow...ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!

Just a few tics on the buffalo's front leg and the Indian's face are all I see.

Cool clash by the feathers, and is that a Masked Indian? Very nice. image

Grade, hmmmm, very lustrous, very nice strike, not a perfect strike (is there such a thing?) but very very nice. The buffalo's tail is a bit of a mystery to me, it should be there with the other reverse definition, right?

No visible signs of wear or friction.

I would be comfortable with a 66 on this one.

    Nice coin!

it's a Fake! It has an F by the date... image

Looks like a decent 66 by strike & luster, but those small hits on each side may just put it in a 65 holder.

    Beautiful buff. I'll guess MS-65.

  • When the indian's hair disappears into the knot and Black Diamond's curly hide is well definded, you know the coin is hammered!

    NGC graded 66.

NGC holder?? MS66 If the lustre really screams, I'd try for a cross.

    That strike is truly hammered......image

I'll be low guess and go with MS64.

Edited to add: My guess is based upon the fact that the 17-S is so tough in grades 65 and higher and because the images have just enough lighter/brighter areas where flaws could be masked unintentionally.

66 FHS (friggin hammered strike) -- but no split tail?!?

    gorgeous.

  • Don't know if it will change your guess or not, but it is currently slabbed by NGC. (The fact that some of you could tell that just by the sliver of white at the tops of the picture, leads me to believe that some of you need to get out more)image

That is what I was thinking. I'll say 66, too. What is going on at the top of the buffalo's foreleg? Planchet flaw?

  • I'd give that beauty a 66!
That thing drips luster and has some killer strike characteristics.

That is a very nice strike for a 1917-S.
    I'd give it MS 65.

SO, comparing this one to your Registry set, I'm going to give it a conservative 65. Price wise only (compared to your Registry) this would probably be a 64, BUT it CAN'T BE with that strike and lustre. And with 66 double the price of a 65 (unless you just went slap CRAZY and really sold the grandkids), I don't think you paid the money for a 66.

all in all, I LOVE THAT COIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tried to go into that field BuffNut, but the only people that would hire me was McDonald's as a french fry transfer engineer.

Looks Gem 65 all the way
  • And the moment we've all been waiting for (drum roll)...

    image

I'm befuzzled! I think this one not only has a shot at a cross, but likely an upgrade. Crack, or send slabbed? I think crack...
  • And congrats to Coinguy- the only one to guess correctly! image

I would have missed it too...

Interesting. It's certainly a very nice coin for a 64!

It looks like a masked indian, is it?

NGC undergraded your Buffalo, it LOOKS 65.

Looks like it could be- I don't have the coin in hand yet, so I couldn't tell you any more details other than the pics unfortunately. I do see what looks like the bottom part of the "mask" extending towards the hair from his eye though. The masked variety is still relatively unknown, and a minor variety at that. Interesting for sure, but it only adds to conversation, and not value I'm afraid.

    Easily 64. Should be 65.

  • I'm finding that I care less and less about what the numeric grade is on the holder, as long as the coin jives with my standards. I would hope for an upgrade, sure, but that is secondary- since I'm not in this to make money. I would live under a bridge and starve if I had to do this for a living!
  • i thought buffalo were gold

It is best not to consider or reach such conclusions based upon anyone's images. Let the coin (in hand) do the talking.image
  • Looks llike the strike is 68 quality, Luster looks pretty good too. I can't see how those little bit of marks limit it to 64. I would'nt have no problem calling it a 65 , but too many marks for a 66 . Let us know what you think when you receive it.
