What does Black marker line across wax boxes mean?

You see several Wax boxes for sale on ebay such as 87 topps football and 83 topps football with large marker lines across top cover of box. Any idea why this is, who did it and what it means?

I think they mean the cards were returned unsold to topps by the retailers. If I remember right you get new cards but there is an extra chance for the packs to be dinged in getting shipped back and forth.

  • It was done by angry employees at Topps, payroll checks were bouncing and that was their way of getting revenge back at the company.

Those are returns from stores and or unsold stock. Topps did that and then sold them at closeout discount prices. I used to go with a friend to Topps and he bought these closeouts several times. I remember going with him as he bought 1984 football wax and cello CASES at $37.00 PER CASE! We loaded his mini van twice with about 60 cases each time. Unfortunately, neither of us have any more boxes or cases.

  • Thanks for the answers guys.......I think just got a decent deal on 16 boxes of 87 topps football on EBAY.......bought what was left of a case and got them for 366.51 or (22.90 per box) even with the shipping only (25.40 per box)...I would buy for those prices all day...
