Need quick advice on ebay transaction--resolved and an apology out to seller

Just bought 2 2006 Silver Anniversary sets in NGC PR/MS-70 on ebay for $825 a set. That is way, way under market. Too good to be true. The reverse proof alone is worth about $2,000. If I thought about it before pulling the trigger I wouldn't have done it but I did. here is the auction:

Ebay Auction

Guy has 292 feedbacks and has been a member since 2002. I emailed him and told him the sets were underpriced and said if it was a mistake to let me know. Guy said it wasn't a mistake and to send the money. Called pay pal and asked what recourse I had if the guy never sent the sets. Pay Pal said I could get $175 back and that was it. The guy said Pay Pal is in the business of providing easy transactions online and not in the business of protecting you from fraudelant transactions. That's a whole new topic. I did one of those $9.95 background checks and he does live at the address provided by pay pal. Should I send the money and take my chances. I just have a nagging feeling I'm going to lose $1,650. What would you do?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit
Just talked to seller and he is a good guy. There was nothing for me to be concerned about. I officially want to apologize to Larry, aka Ljrambo111, and hope that nothing that I said or anybody else said embarrassed him. I learned a lesson to call the party involved first before bringing my issues out into the public. If I did that it would have saved everyone some trouble. Last comment is that his shipping wasn't out of line for the products he is sending. The coins are being sent insured registered mail and will cost him a good chunk to ship.
Thanks
Jay

  • Hmm... Tough one. If you pay by a credit card through paypal, can you do a charge back if you get into trouble?

The same seller has more for sale at the same price.

    No, wait, they're gone now.

If you haven't already done so, you might consider getting the seller's contact phone number through Ebay and calling him. That way you can see how the guy sounds and get a better feel as to whether the account has been hijacked.

Other than the price that seems to you to be too good to be true, (I know nothing about the item in question), is there anything else that makes you suspicious?

You could propose to use an escrow account, pay any fees involved and even offer to up the price you pay to the seller as enticement/compensation.image

Why is it worth so much ? It's three ounces of silver.

  • Real name, real address, contact, with a reply.

Pay with a credit card if you can. I wouldn't ever count on Paypal to come through on a transaction gone wrong, but believe me, your credit card company will.

I asked the guy at pay pal about that. He said that if I paid with a credit card and did a chargeback I would get in trouble with pay pal and possibly have my account cancelled. He said pay pal didn't want to assume the debt for my chargeback. I do enough business on ebay that I don't want to have my account cancelled for $1,650.

Use a credit card via Paypal and the credit card company usually provides protection. You can acll your company, but, mine helped me out one time and went after the crook and I did get my money back. Good luck! Ray

  • Paypal is NOT going to cancel your account if you don't get your coins. The seller must provide timely shipping, with a service that can be tracked over the web in order to be protected form chargebacks. If you get your coins, great! If you don't, then you have a reason to do a chargeback.

<< <i>The seller has revised the following item information:
    Date Time Revised Information

I wonder what his BIN price was before he revised it?

<< <i>Paypal is NOT going to cancel your account if you don't get your coins. >>

They very well might if he did a chargeback through his credit card company. Read their TOS.

  • Oh ok sorry about that...

His BIN before was $600 I think. He sold 3 sets.

  • the auction looks legit to me. i think the price is about right for them. if they were pcgs 70`s with FS designation they would go for alot more. ngc 70`s are probably equal to pcgs 69`s. this is just my opinion and maybe i`m all wrong. i am just saying its a fair price and seller appears ok.

I think that you are getting ripped off, but you will not realize it until after you receive the sets, maybe later this year, maybe next year, maybe...

  • I think sellers shipping charges are excessive and outrages, $40.75 for 3 coins I'll pass His auctions or anyone's with excessive shipping charges every time. Tells Me something about the seller right there. Just one of My pet peeves, rip off shipping. But as far as His auction goes seems legit, just pay via credit card through Paypal and You can do a chargeback if coins are not received.

Jesus christ, dont you know you're sposed to do you criminal background checks & ask questions before the auction ends? You're committed now buddy, your bid is your contract and all that stuff. You had better pay him promptly and hope he doesn't see this thread questioning his reputation & criminal past.

This has happened to me in the past where i have not recieved anything. I file a paypal report, and they end up saying they cant do anything (only refund what is in the sellers account at the time). At this point I write up a full report and fax it to my CC company, and within 5 days, I have my money back. No problems have happened with paypal after this is done, besides an email.

If you're nervous but still want to do the deal, consider explaining that to the seller and asking him if you can pay for one set at a time, and he can ship after payment. That way, your downside is cut in half. For all it's worth, I'd happily go along with this if I was the seller.

Jesus Christ Dog97 give me a break. I admitted I pulled the trigger too fast. Like my 3 year old daughter is always telling me I'm not perfect. It wasn't a criminal check. That costs 49.95. It was just verification of his address.

I'm going to take the advice given. I'll call the guy and get a feel for him. Pay for the auction with a credit card and hope for the best.

Thanks for the advice. You guys are good!!!!!

  • this is my first post, just wanted to add my 2 cents, don't let your own whatever get in the way of following thru with the commitment that you made when you bid, however as it was suggested, use a cc thru paypal, look the guy has a good reputation i don't think he went thru all this just to set a couple of people up for a couple grand, anyway another suggestion would be to (after you pay thru paypal by cc) pay extra and have them sent overnite, that way you would have them in time to stop your cc company from paying if there was a problem or if they were not received...............just my opinion.image

I can see a RP PCGS graded70 F/S 20th going for $2000--these is only one of those so far. The price you paid for those sets is not under the market, i see no problem at all with the seller honoring your bid, sounds like he may even want to kiss you, since his others went for 25%less

I did not post comment, but followed thread, thanks for bring us (the forum) up to date with honest straight forward responses.

  • Well I don't know what to say, Yes they are scarce, and yes I was lucky, I got six sets of PF70 the Anniversary Silver Eagle Sets graded by my most favorite grading company NGC. The one thing I can say is, I'm not greedy. I see people try to push sets really hard for exorbitant amounts of money. I was modest,
I went with a BUY it Now Auction. Sure I saw sets selling for 1300.00 or more, I even saw as high as 2000.00. But I wasn't greedy. I sold sets of the Anniversary eagle NGC PF 70 for 600.00 and I sold some sets for 825.00 What I don't understand is the HYPE that most of us as "coin collectors" or numismatist get when the first of an issue starts hitting the market. I see people purchasing new coin sets for 15 to 20 the times of cost??? And they are educated?

I believe the cost of the PF70 Silver Anniversary Eagle Sets should never be over 1000.00. If I made someone happy I'm glad, I will not sleep good at night because I took someone else's money. I guess I won't be rich. Because only ruthless people do this to other people. OK maybe I should fish and put the buy it now at 2000.00 like others did Or those stupid coin shows do. I find the shows entertaining. But can't believe what we educated collectors do, we overreact and flush our money away. perhaps it's their greed. Sometimes I make a mistake and forget to change the shipping costs. But I actually reimburse the money for the exorbitant charge, how many others do that?

I predict that Jay will get his coins on Saturday, at least they should try to deliver by then. I also predict that the mint will make 250,000 of these sets and eventually the public will all be able to buy them for 600.00 The guys who originally bought my three sets for 600.00 never even blinked. Hey guys smarten up, be patient, and watch the price fall. Jay I'm sure you will be happy, Please leave a positive. I see Modern Coin Mart and Keydatecoin bid on my auctions, Perhaps if Keydatecoin gave out positive feedback Jay wouldn't have been anxious.

I don't get it. This is a pre-sale. They do not even have the grades yet, yet they are selling sets graded 70. Does NGC give away the 70 rating like candy or what? What good are the coin grades going to be if there are hundreds or thousands of NGC 70 coins out there?
