Toning Question?? Have you got one ?

We've all seen the coins that have been taped into a Whitman album and have a big + 0r X across the coin thats still bright and the rest of the coin is toned. Has anyone got an example in a PCGS holder of a Morgan or Peace that they can show us. Will PCGS slab them or do they get bagged? Thanks, CCG

I have had some in the past that were stored in an album with a plastic strip to hold the coin in. The top and bottom of the coin were toned with a white stripe going across. PCGS did holder them.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Thats funny I sent 4 in recently and all were slabbed MS63. The pictures do not do the coins justice. They look awsome in hand. Here is two of them. All 4 look similar:

I go these from an old lady who said that she got them back on her 21st birthday. They guy who she babysat for (she babysat the guys kids) had taped a roll of 1879 S and 1881 S Morgans in the shape of a "21" onto a velvet covered board. The reverses were up and had the tape on them. The obverses show nice tone from the velvet. I had to remove tape residue from the coins with acetone. Under the residue it is blast white with pop luster. The rest of the coins have toned around the tape.

This is good to know; my grandmother had a bunch of coins in albums and in bank sleeves that went to my uncle when she passed. When my uncle found out I collect he gave the coins to me. Most of them are just the shiny coins she got from the bank so they are circulated but there are a few mint states in there bunch and most of them have album toning.
