jpg size / compression

Trying to figure out how best to show a photo with 50k size limit. The two photos below are from the same original 2048x1536 image. The top image was first cropped to 1536x1536 then resized to 768x768 (an even /2 reduction) then compressed to 28% using reacompressor. The bottom image was cropped to 1533x1533, resized to 511x511 (an even /3), then compressed to 42%.

Now the question: Which do you prefer, the larger but more compressed image, or the smaller and clearer one?

The coin came out of my Gem stash.

I like the larger one but prefer the smaller one as it has better useable detail.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Nice coin and great pics. I slightly prefer the smaller image (dimension-wise).

I prefer the second, but both suffer from artifacts, so you might consider a 300x300 with an even lower compression as another alternative. Also, what are you using to resize the photos? The artifacts look eerily like those of Saintguru's photos done by Mike Printz. hmmmm.....Mike

  • you could load the original files to photobucket and then just tag them to your post.

  • Top one is a little mushy, but both have noticable horizontal seams at regular intervals.

The small one. It's still good enough for grade estimates etc. and still shows the toning by LIBERTY and the minute ticks on the face.
I hate big pictures that make the thread expand into the next room. By the time I scroll the screen I get disoriented & lost and can't even tell what part of the coin I'm looking at.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Both pictures fit easily onto my screen since I use a bigger monitor at higher resolution. I like the big one but would prefer it non-compressed. However, with my screen settings I don't see any of the artifacts that others claim to see.

Just use photobucket. My life has gotten measurably easier since I quit trying to hit the 48k perfect resize. You can never know for sure how many bits a photo will be since JPG compression is more or less effective depending on how many adjacent pixels are the same color.
