Fraud alert - eBayers BEWARE!!!

Today i was NEARLY scammed by someone on eBay with a supposed "second chance offer". I was too gullible apparently to see through it. I have written up the entire experience into a word document to send to everyone i know that uses eBay. I don't know how to append an attachment here, or if it's even possible to do so. But basically it starts off with what LOOKS like a legitimate "second chance offer" from eBay, which then gives you contact information (this guy's e-mail addr was peterarichardson@yahoo.com). When he writes, he claims he lives in the USA, but is currently in London on his honeymoon, and wants the money to buy his wife a gift. He then has a phony eBay invoice sent, which explains that you must use Western Union in order to send the money. It even provides you with an icon to click on to find the nearest Western Union facility to you. I called a nearby place and was told it would $68. for the money order itself due to the amount, and where it was going. When i notified the "seller" of this, he even agreed to deduct $100. from the price, and issue a new invoice to save me the money, and for the extra hassle of having to go to my bank to pay CASH for the money order. To make a long story shorter, i contacted eBay and found out that this is NOT how they operate--that they don't use Western Union any more, and that this was a SCAM. He told me to contact Western Union IMMEDIATELY to cancel the transaction. Since it had only been about an hour, i did so and was LUCKY to have the money re-issued back to MYSELF, and was told they would send me the cost of the money order itself refunded in the mail, which would take about 6 weeks.

I am trying to alert everyone i know about this scam, and since the item was a baseball card, i wanted to get the word out HERE as well. PASS IT ON!!!!!

  • Whenever a seller asks for Western Union, it's almost always a scam.

the easiest way to tell if legit or not is to go to your my ebay page and the second chance offer will be in your messages. if it's not in there then it's a scam.

I too found that only ebay messages are the way to go. I would get tons of fake emails from ebay and Paypal saying my acct. this or wheres my item, all to get my info. Some looked perfect. Even had a Paypal that used my full name!! Report them.

  • Ebay's filled with Gypsies, tramps and thieves.
But every night the bidders come around,
    And lay their money down.

I bid on a high $ item that ended a few days ago and didn't win. So far I have received 5 second chance offers from 5 different email addresses. The item ended at over $5000 but the last 2 offers I got offered it to me for $1500. Stuff like this is why a lot of sellers use private auctions.
