HOBO Nickels

I just listed a 1913 HOBO Nickel on ebay for a friend. It seems to get a lot of viewers and the closed listings sell for between $50-200.

Does anyone have any idea why? Is it just because of the 1913 date or is there a large collector base. Most of the carvings seem pretty rudimentary.

I won't list the auction because this isn't the BS&T forum and it is my listing. But i will post the coin.

  • I'd like to know, too! My hobo is a 1913, and pretty crude. If I can get that much for it, off to eBay it goes!

Hobo nickels have quite a following, for both the modern and classic carvings.

    Check out this website!

Your hobo nickel is a lot nicer than mine. image Yours was a pretty nice Ty. 2, before it was carved. So while hobo nickels are cool, I would rather that particular piece had not been chosen. image

I think a lot of hobo nickels are from the early dates, but I am not sure where I read that.

  • Holy smokes!! the auction is bid up to $76 after just one day. I learn something new about this market every day. These little pieces of "Americana" sure are popular with the people who collect them.

    Subject: http://www.geocities.com/quirkybuffalos/Grading.html

This is exactly what I've been looking for off and on over the past year!

FIRST... are you aware of any other websites that have made an effort to show the grading of Buffalo Nickels? I'm guessing not since you were moved to create one for yourself.

SECOND... I would like to; 1) make a NEWS item on www.hobonickels.org/news.htm directing interested OHNS members to the subject webpage and 2) capture your work and save it for archival purposes (mostly in case your webpage should eventually disappear someday but also because I am always nervous about safeguarding resources like this for use by future numismatists.)

I understand you are a YN... congratulations for your obvious scholarship from an ON (OLD Numismatist...ANA-LM553)!

FIRST... Nope, never came across one.

SECOND... Sure! Wow, that's pretty cool. image I was just working on the Resources section of my site and I put a link to the OHNS site because it is very informative. If you want to save my page for archival purposes, go right ahead! The whole site is still a work in progress, though. I just got through rewriting the html for the main pages, but the pages for my individual coins need to be worked on. I just created that yesterday and I thought I should add it to my site. image I am glad you found it useful.

    Thanks very much! image

Andy- Nice to hear from you. It has been a long time since "summer camp"! We shared some great days there.

  • Mr. Claypool... (I assume)...

Beautiful display cases! You are a really close neighbor... I go through Tonganoxie regularly taking the wife back and forth to MCI.

Thanks for the scan of Bill's #308... I have a virtually complete set of scans of every carving Bill Jameson has ever done. Alowing for human error of course.

  • Amanda- I'm certain that the vertically displayed 1913DT1 AU-50 you have on the webpage linked to the 1913DT1 AU-50 on your Grading webpage is the same coin in both cases. Perhaps that was your intent but it seemed odd when all your other "linked under" webpages show different examples than the one on your Grading webpage. Your text seems to indicate that you are talking about two different specimens: "Another Type One buffalo..." but I may reading it incorrectly. Take care- Verne

All the coins now link to the proper pages, I was still working on the links. I guess my wording was confusing, I have several type one buffaloes in my collection.

It's all fixed now, my intent was to have links from the grading page to larger images of the same coins. image

Thanks for pointing that out! image

  • I want to know if its worth at least what I paid for it. And heck, if CoinHog's can go that high, how much do you think mine would do?

I have no idea, as I do not follow the market.

Coinhogs 'host coin,' if you will, is a higher grade coin than your hobo's 'host coin.' Not to mention an atypically sharp strike for the date. I have no idea whether this would affect the price of a hobo nickel, but I suspect it would.

I got mine (posted above) for two bucks. Obviously, yours is better and accordingly 'worth' more than two bucks. I don't know what coinhog's auction ended at.

I say enjoy it for what it is, and since you bought it, at the time you must have thought the coin was 'worth' what you paid.

All hobo nickels are unique, so I am not sure you can price one based off of another. But if you really want to know, go ahead and list it. image

(BTW, yours looks older to me, but I cannot be sure as I know so little about these pieces.)

Yes, it was in a junk box. image

Yours, as you can see the date, is a better piece. Also, the carver took the time to remove much of the original design in their creation of a new design. On mine, you can still see the feathers and the braid and the date is gone. There is a good chance that the date on my coin was gone before it was even carved in the first place.

I really like the ones that are done on the reverse, turning the buffalo into a backpacker or something.

15 dollars seems like a good price to me, but again I do not follow the market.

  • Amanda- I don't know if you followed the link to the archival copy of your Grading page or not. Either your software or Geocities protected your page(s) being copied verbatim, not a bad idea by the way, so I couldn't capture them for the archive as you had them configured. Besides you were changing the configuration/content as I was working on that process. Anyway... I may have butchered some things in my cut-n-paste approach to saving your work. If you want to discuss this off-line, so we don't bore these fine folks, then please contact me at GrassHopper and we'll make certain I haven't done anything really stupid. Thanks!

I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone here and mention a project that I have on a highend gun engraver's bench as we speak. I have no point to make other than to show off something I am quite enamored with at the moment. Attached is the "mock-up" design I sent the engraver. It is incomplete as we intend to place a couple of syllabic Inuktitut words in the background. I describe this carving in process at “Inunnguaq” to be carved in gold!. Take care all!
