Many collectors choose to collect circulated coins in their series of interest, mostly because they are more affordable. Sometimes, there is a circulated coin that looks just "perfect for the grade", without excessive handling marks or hairlines, no real damage or numismatic abuse. I have been recently (and finally) outbid on such a coin in the upcoming Heritage auction and thought I would share it with the forum.

This is the look that I try to find in coins for my collection.

  • I prefer circulated to uncirculated. Much more character is there most of the time. Nice coin, by the way!

    RYK 'Dirty Gold Man'..

    Based on your previous posts, this seems like a coin that you would want to own.

    Why is it that you seem relieved to have been outbid on this coin?

    that is one nice circulated coin. ill take this original over a dipped bu anyday. in most cases i find original circulated gold more eye appealing than uncirculated gold.

    I agree with you RYK. I like AU50 gold and XF45 Barber Halves and Type Pieces.

    Update: The coin sold for $2530, which is Trends for AU-50. Perhaps I should retitle my thread Gem AU.

    I tend to have a strong preference for VF to AU coins over mint state coins. There are at least five reasons for this:

    * They are easier to grade;

    * They don't have huge difference in price (usually) between adjacent grades, so if you're off by one grade in your assessment when you buy it you haven't lost 3/4 of your investment;

    * They can usually be safely purchased raw (at least moderately priced ones) if you can evaluate the surfaces since the minutiae which differentiate a 63 from a 64 don't come into play as much and because it's easier to tell when they've been harshly messed with;

    * They are simply much more affordable;

    * As coins which have circulated, they have a deeper connection with our history which is one of the things that draws me to numismatics to begin with.

    Maybe we also need "EF-50" in addition to AU-62? image
