Okay, Ron, this is a chance for PCGS to again lead the way, to blaze the trail!

PCGS should be the first to designate the Birthmark Die variety of the 1967 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar. First noted in Rick Tomaska's definitive work on 1950 to 1970 proof coinage, this variety is VERY cool. It's clearly visible to the naked eye, it is not an error but rather a specific die, thus repeatable. In addition, early strikes from this particular die produce some of the most spectacular deep cameo examples of the SMS Kennedys. It is scarce, but there are more than enough examples to generate collector interest.

  • Hi Russ,

That's a very interesting variety. Is it a struck-through flaw or an actual defect in the die? I'll run it by our Variety guy to see if this is a trail we want to blaze.
