I read somewhere that 90% of the trade dollars on Ebay are fakes. Those aware of what is going on I'm sure are extremely cautious about who they are buying from and hopefully know how to spot the fakes.
What impact are the Chinese fakes having on the Silver/Trade dollar markets?
a positive affect
trade dollars are getting hot as many realize that they are sleeper undervalued really historical sexy collectible BIG BEAUTIFUL coins
and there are not enough genuine original mint products to go around so the chinese are just FEEDING demand...........which is easy to do as most all collectors are cheap and have a something for nothing attitude and greed clogs the mind so they get sold rather easily which is unfortunate but this just educates collectors and makes the genuine mint product even more desirable and there is a greater learning surve bec ause of all these fakes and i see recently that many novice collectors can spot many fakes that they thought were real a year ago! so some good is coming of all of this
many are getting interested with the trade dollars as there is such a fuss about them and now want the real ones.as even so called common date trade dollars in circ uncleaned with great eye appeal are many multiple times scarcer than even slightly better date to semi key morgan dollars
add to the fact that now most all buyers want them pcgs/ngc and then you can see the no brainer quality of a real trade dollar compaired to these crappy fakes abet at least to the advanced collector of trades!!
hint.... 1874-p mint trade dollars you hardly ever see for sale circ let alone uncand are the true sleeper dated coin of the entire trade dollar series..................................

How long before the Chinese start counterfeiting NGC and PCGS slabs?

as it is a no brainer for me a genuine trade dollar or any good coin in a genuine pcgs/ngc slab that is basically real and accurately graded and killer eye appeal with A "michael" look to it
impossible to counterfeit those and all the rest i pass on and really do not care about

At this point there is probably no incentive to counterfeit the PCGS and NGC slabs as long as the raw fake trade dollars are selling well. If it gets to the point that the raw fakes stop selling then I would not be surprised if fake slabs start coming out of China. I doubt that it would be impossible to counterfeit them, they might now look completely like the real thing but would probably be good enough to fool the unwary. Taking legal action against someone putting coins in fake slabs in China would probably be a lost cause.

I think that ebay is probably actually a minor market for these. It appears more that these get more often sold as trinkets, and so slabs are just not needed for them. They are meant to fool, and only to the extent that they are meant to to sell them, the general public, not the numismatic community.

But for every knowledgable buyer how many not-so-knowledgable buyers are there?
