ON HOLD: Original Bank Wrapped (Shotgun) Wheat Cent Rolls I have saved over the past 40 years!! MUST

Please hold off your pm's with your want list.

I will list the specific rolls for sale in the next day or two.

These rolls are taking over my bank's vault room and my bank is worried about that the weight of these things!!

I have bought these rolls over the years from many collectors, dealers such as Virg Marshall (back in the 1960's) and Wayne Herndon (which was my more recent purchases in the late 1990's).

I also have memorial obw cent rolls in limited quantities

PLEASE READ the below comments:

This has nothing to do with Halloween!

However, I am spooked. This has caused an undue delay in getting my list of obw as well as other kinds of rolls, etc. available for purchase posted.

Here is why:

I have to resolve an ethical and an emotional dilemma first.

I got spooked three days ago looking at a copy of a note I wrote to a seller 30 years ago (when I was only 23 years old) promising him never to open "his rolls" or to ever sell them to anyone knowingly that they might open them during my lifetime. He made me swear on a stack of figurative bibles never to violate his terms! Back then, the rolls were real cheap so cost was not an issue and I figured who would ever want to open these cent rolls?.

This will probably kill most of the sales of my rolls so I have to figure out a way to do this right and not violate most of my purchases which were from mostly older collectors who felt preserving the history of "their rolls" was very important.

Some of my purchases over the years including from Wayne Herndon more recently have no restrictions but now I am also afraid of bad "karma," a term a fellow collector Greg on these boards used with me just a short time ago.

I am now feeling like the farmer on the beautiful land that was carefully preserved before his time and now he is in fear of "selling out" to the swarming developers who may or will carve the land into postage sized lots with millions of oversized houses and inustrial plants foir the maximum "yield on the land,"

I may request some kind of written agreement with the buyer(s) that no more than 1 out of every 5 or even 10 obw rolls purchased/sold never be opened or be caused to be opened as a result of this transaction to "save them for the next several generations."

Suggestions are always welcomed.

One of my thoughts has been to donate a decent number of these obw rolls to the ANS (heavens forbid the ANA right now!). But then again why would they want such a thing as obw rolls??? I will investigate at the risk of being laughed at.

I thank you for your pm's but did not realize how many of you are out there!!

    45 pm's from 45 different people?!?!?!?

It will be impossible for me to answer all of you!!!

    I apologize.

Please hold off until I have listed my first grouping which will be my most common wheat roll sets.

Once I get myself a little better organized, I will list not only my obw rolls but also some of my non obw rolls. My intention is to hang onto at least 2 rolls of each date and mm.

In some cases, I have over 200-300 of some wheatie dates such as the 1958-P issue. 100 of them will be very expensive as the folk at the JPMorganChase Bank is desperately trying to buy any them from me as it has the exalted name of the Guaranty Trust name on the rolls. The Guaranty Trust merged with JP Morgan then JP Morgan merged with Chase Manhattan Bank. This individual want them as a "cool" gift item for the year 2008 is it will be a 50th anniversary item for them! I have already turned down an offer of $25 each for the 100 rolls I have in one full bag alone. I may have to keep these aside as they are very determined to get these rolls from me. I keep telling the fellow that my wife was supposed to have a free checking account at Chase and they are annoying her with these $10 service charges that they keep having to remove!!

I also have some beautiful BU red rolls going back well into the 1930's that are not obw rolls.

I do remember having a few 1951-P and 1953-P obw rolls from Wayne Herndon but those are the ones I am reluctant to let go of since I believe I do not have more than 2 of them each.

By the way, an interesting anecdote; I also have about 30 very special obw quarter rolls as well. They are pedigreed to the Ambasssador Henry and Emery Norweb collection!!! The problem is I cannot PROVE it!!!! Besides, they really did not like collecting rolls of coins!!! They sold them to me in 1971 and 1972 only to get rid of them from their vaults in Cleveland, Ohio.

The oldest quarter roll I own that came from the Norweb collection is an obw 1940-P quarter roll. But I am not letting any of them go!!!

Alas, the Norwebs were not into collecting obw cent rolls!!!! image

If and when you have any extra 1951 P wheats I am interested. Thank you, Mark
  • Do you recall like a year ago I said something on the forum along the lines of... "can I send you $1000 right now, just to have first shot at your rolls if you ever decide to sell". I'll try to beat anyone else's offer. Thanks!!
  • I have half an ammo box full of original OBW 1960-D Small Date rolls that are very cool because of the possibility of finding the expensive error in them plus I have BU rolls of Wheats from the 40s and 50s some of which are handpicked rolls of all gems! One example is I have a roll of 1947-D that is all MS-66 Red that I have put away for posterity. I also have a roll of 1940-D that is all MS-66s and 67s as well. I literally have a roll of each date from 1954 to 1968 that are handpicked gems+. Most of these are put away for posterity.

Maybe in 2009 when the 100th anniversary hits these common date Lincoln Wheats will finally get their due and stop selling for slab prices on eBay lol.

I too would like to buy some of your rolls.

I guess I will continue to wait like all the others.

    Thanks for the opportunity.
  • Not that I would rate with any of these people asking. But when you do decide to sell, I'm there.

Geez- isn't you buy/sells on the silver and gold 20th Anniv sets so much easier!

By the way (and this is by no means legal advice), you might want to consult your family attorney. Your promise to NEVER open the rolls during your lifetime may have violated the "Rule of Perpetuities" - remember what that lawyer did wrong in the film "Bodyheat".

I think this goes along with figuratively offering someone "first" shot if you ever sell. And if you don't?? I've had the same thing turned around at me and it felt pretty bad. I had been promised first shot on a coin I was reluctant to give up. The new owner needed it to complete a major set. As soon as he completes the set he sells the group and dealer handling the affair tells me sorry. So going forward, I'm far less inclined to pay any attention to stupid things I may have uttered in haste over the years: "sure, you can have first shot," or "you'll be the first one to know." It's all about business in the end Oreville. If you did not sign a contract it's verbage or puffery...esp after 30 years or more.

While cent rolls sound neat, esp coming from you, I'm gonna have to pass. In 6 months I'd be itching to dump them I think.

    roadrunner: I understand.

Problem is I put it in writing as part of the deal. I believe the consideration was the favorable price when I signed the letter. I believe there are other deals in which I promised in writing never to allow these rolls to be broken up.

I never thought opening rolls would be a more attractive game than leaving them unopened.

As I said, I may just have to donate those rolls.

I'd be careful about donating rolls to institutions. Besides the likely lack of care they might receive, institutions have big lawyers and have shown a tendency to break covenants when it comes to terms in a donation. After 20, 30, 50 years they reason, who cares and why should it matter.

Could you go back to the orig sellers of those coins and work something out? My brother made a similar deal with me in his mind when he sold me his collection when he was 17 or so. I was 12.
For $5 I got his stash but he wanted it to stay in the family. I never considered it anything but all mine but eventually I gave it back to his family about 15 years ago.

Good luck with whatever you decide. But I fear down the road, the new owners of these coins will have the same decision as you had to make, and many will not be so righteous.

While I admire your ethics, I really was lloking foward to perhaps buying a few rolls. C'est la vie.

    Oreville,

Having worked with you on the last deal, I understand your conflict as you are a man of your word and ethics.
I would also hesitate to donate to an institution as I believe that they would do whatever monetarily they could.

Your best bet is to find someone who you can trust and go down the line that way (say, to a YN you believe you could trust or his/her parents/guardians until they come of age).

We have a SDB where things, incl unopened ones, sit, but not everyone may have that.

The catch would be that you are unlikely to get much $ from someone who would honestly keep them unopened or make that a condition to the next sale (and so on and so forth).

  • Quite a dilemma Oreville. I still have holes in my OBW wheat roll set if that's the way you decide to go.

Keep your word and don't sell them until the original owner passes away.
    When in doubt, don't.
