1862 half penny error need opinions please

I have this 1862 1/2 penny not bad condition au/ but I noticed the doubling, just courious about it and if anyone has seen anything like it before, Thanks,MoJo

p.s I can do another photo if nobody can see it, but I am off to babysit the dog from hell at my parents house,they cant leave with out him going into a fit of rage and tearing up anything in his path lol, be back in a few hrs

  • Looks like MDD, Machine Doubling Damage, I believe there is an article in the PCGS Library about it somewhere.

    Quite common on modern Australian coins.

    What you most probably are seeing is a form of die erosion somewhat akin to Longacre Doubling. It's not rare, and no premium is given. The BRM is also notorious for repunching not only dates but the legends as well. You'll see many recut lettering, especially with copper. Sometimes those are desired, most times not.

    I have a RB 1862 half penny. It has doubling also but looks different than yours. The doubling is strongest on the 1 and 6 on the date.
    Sorry I can't get a picture. Haven't been able to figure out how.
