AGE struck thru any value?

raycycaraycyca Posts: 1,707 ✭✭✭
I have a PCGS graded 69 DCAM gold anniversary eagle. This coin has been struck thru a small object, just above the G in gold on the reverse, about the same size as the G and is visable to the naked eye. PCGS didn't slab it as an error. Should it be slabbed as an error? Is it worth anything extra? Thanks in advance! Ray
PS: Sorry, BUT, I can't post any photos. I submitted the coin to PCGS, paid for True View, BUT, they didn't take the photos! Oimage Now offereing a refund for non-service?

If you ordered True View you would think that PCGS would pay shipping both ways so they could take the picture you paid for!image

I wish I could get a good photo. It looks like a golfing divot. Another name would be small meteor crator. The bottom of it actually goes onto the other side of the top of the G too. Maybe it was a defective planchet? Can't tell.

  • Wow. I'd like to see a picture of that! Minor errors on new coins bring good money.

Guess what? PCGS goofed and DID take photos!! YEAH! THey made a small mistake and didn't look in the right spot. I just got the photos from them. I'll include the photo and see if you can spot it. It's at the top of the G in gold on the reverse. It shows up very bodly on the photo PCGS sent me. If you PM me with your address, I can send the original photo and maybe you can post a bigger scan than I can? Here goes! Ray image

    This grading is confusing.

I got a 69 eagle from PCGS that I can look high and low and not see a single flaw, not even a spec of a shiny spot. And this coin, with a crater is equal to my coin ?!?!

Dang, I must have done something bad in a previous life.

aficiondo, a strike through does not lower the grade.

I called the mint and they don't have any left. I guess I'm stuck with a mint goof, hugh? I don't know why PCGS didn't pick it up. It even shows very clear in the photo. makes me wonder if they got the grade right? LOLimage

IT's what I call a "white elephant" error.

The value of the gold coin far, far, exceeds the
small premium that a struck thru would have
    on a non-precious metal coin.

It sounds pretty small - so I don't think you'll
find a buyer who will pay a premium for it.

And to think, QA at the branch mint inspects (eye balls obverse/reverse) on each and every gold coin that goes into collector circulation. Human errors are always fun to catch...this one has multiples of human errors.
