Disappointing grades

derrybderryb Posts: 37,691 ✭✭✭✭✭
Got results of my 5 silver eagle sets sent, unopened to PCGS. Recieved 6 grades of 68 out of 15 coins (no 70s). Would I be correct in assuming the coins grading out at 68 must have some defect? Or is this an acceptable number out of 15 coins?

The site screwed up and posted before I was finished typing.

The only winner was the grading company grading your coins. My 16 sets will remain ungraded.

Yea, I spoke with customer service the day after I shipped them. I expressed concerns about reading here that mint customers who did open their sets were finding the coins loose and dinged up. PCGS assured me that if there was any problems with the coins upon opening them, they would contact me before grading them. What a disappointment - 6 "first strike" coins with a grade of 68. Sounds like "Best possible strike, but defective."

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Especially this First Strike stuff but it had to be expected since we cannot examine our submissions before they are submitted.

Personally, I think this was just plain silly on PCGS's part! And all just to keep a few 2006 Proofs from getting the First Strike designation.

As for your grades, 68 is ok but a 69 would have been much better.

You still think 69's weren't worth your time?

I guess one must decide which is more important: the numerical grade or the "first strike" designation. If first strike strikes your fancy, send them in unopened all day. If getting a 70 is your goal, you have a duty to open and inspect.

    Yes.

Coins with no visible defects and full strikes and excellent planchets to start with can get 70s. A coin with a less than full strike or a planchet flaw, while mint made, would not be deserving of a 70 and would get 69 at best. Add a hairline and you are down to a 68.

Now a 68 is a beautiful coin. That is what I would call a superb gem. Many people can't tell the difference between a 68 and higher grade coin even if they do use magnification.

One can not expect all coins produced by the mint to be 70s or even 69s.

thanks to all for info. Purpose of post was not to complain, but to learn. Sounds like 68's on proofs are to be expected, just not 6 out of 15 coins. I also learned about not inspecting coins before sending in for grading. I might be a newbie, but i love this hobby.

Sorry to hear it. I just mailed a sealed box of AGEs to be graded. I have never before sent a coin without careful examination.
