1949-D/S Nickel Question

I got a 1949-D nickel from my grandmother, that's in F condition, and I was checking to see if it was a D/S nickel. There seems to be something going on near the mintmark, but it doesn't seem to be as strong as I'd expect the "S" to be. So, is this what a 1949-D/S mintmark looks like, or is this just a normal mintmark?

  • Here's a ms example, but Cherrypickers' has a much better image, obviously.

  • that is a 49 D/S
  • Thanks -- it does sort of look like the picture of the MS coin, but the "S" just isn't quite as prominent to make me 100% sure...

Decided to play with the new qx-5, which I'm less than impressed with. But for $75, which I guess was cheap, what the heck.

  • I do like those Digital Blue microscopes -- not the best, but for the price they're pretty good (I think I got mine for closer to $40). Mine looks like it may have the upper part of the S mintmark to the upper-left of the D, but doesn't fill in the inside of the D like yours.
