If you were gonna buy a merc, which one?

I'll narrow it down bit more. I want to buy a pcgs graded mercury dime (yes the winged head of liberty) and I aonly want to spend around 30-40 bucks. What year and grade should I shoot for? Any input will be appreciated. (Assume you are talking to someone who knows nothing and you won't be far off.)

I think you can find a coin dating in the 1940s in MS67 no bands for that price range. Try ebay and good luck.

I think you can find some of the 40's in 66 with full bands at that price, and if not then you can certainly find something in 65FB and have a few bucks left. You might appreciate having the fully struck coin more than the extra freedom from marks. On such a small coin, a 65 usually doesn't have many disturbances of note anyway.

Thanks for the opinions. I have been scouring e-bay and checking the pcgs price guide. I noticed the forties was probably the decade to shoot for. I am buying it for my brother for christmas. He was fascinated by one he recently got in change at a chinese resturaunt. (He had never seen one before.) It was very worn and he couldn't make out all the details. I thought I would get him a decent one to look at.

I would suggest later 30's mint marked ms65 or above with good eye apeal, there out there and the series is soft right now.

IMHO, I would go for something in the 40's with full bands. I'd also recommend something PCGS-slabbed. That's the advice I got when I started collecting Mercuries, and it's served me well. It teaches you what to look for (more or less).
