American Silver Eagle Uncirculated Change in appearance????

Was there a change in the American Silver Eagle over the years? The 2006 coins exhibit a remarkable difference from say a 1986 coin. I wouldn't call it toning by a longshot either.

I'm thinking either the alloy was changed..........late 90's or the planchet prep was changed. The newer coins are duller or more satiny in appearance. Obviously at .999 there shouldn't be an alloy change per say, but more likely a polishing, planchet prep, something issue.

Are there different "types" of silver? Does silver from Nevada look like silver from elsewhere?

Or of course the other possiblility is I'm just plain old wrong.

It's not an alloy, it's almost pure silver in all cases; so it didn't change. I think your referring to the frosted look of later year SAEs, which would be due to the preparation of the dies.

Anybody with a collection of unc silver eagles knows what you are talking about, my preference is for the early years of the coins.....

Nothing more then prep of the planchets however.....

Silver is silver no matter where you get it from.....
