Why...

cant the NFL let overtime be a full 15 minutes, I just dont think its fair that the whole game can/may be determined by a coin flip.

  • I wish NFL OT was like college OT.
  • i agree.... it would make alot of sense if it were just like college or some form of those rules...cause its pretty much just whoever just wins that flip...little unfair, you can be good but not lucky!

I don't, and my team was victimized by it today...

I can't frigging stand college OT, it's pathetic.
in the NFL, you have a chance to be good on defense during the OT, here it is: stop your opponent, and get the ball back, just like during regulation time.

what about a defense heavy squad in the regular game which makes your offensive team have less plays than thier offense?
why not mandate that each offense during the regular game time has 40 offensive plays to score as many points as they can?
I think that's equivalent to the college OT rules.

I agree. Pittsburgh had every opportunity to stop them on defense in OT...they didn't
  • Look-up the stats, the team that wins the coin-toss doesn't have as much of an advantage as you believe.

Of course when both teams quit on defense, the advantage of receiving is bigger.

College OT is a helluva lot more exciting...

They showed the graphic at the beginning of OT. It's not as lopsided as you think. It's about 29% that the team winning the coin toss, wins the game on the first drive of OT...

Oops, I see you mentioned that, too!

College OT is an abomination. Why do they change the rules so entirely for OT? If they want both teams to have the ball, then fine, give both offenses a chance. But this crap about putting the ball at the 25 is a joke.

And I agree with the above posts - the guys on defense get paid just like the guys on offense. Defense needs to step it up and get some stops, not let the other team march down the field.
  • Both teams should have one shot, if one scores, the other gets a chance. If both teams do not score, then it goes on to sudden death. And that college football OT crap is so damn fecal, if they have to do it that way, give the ball on the 50 yard line, at least you would have to run a few plays to get into scoring range!

Here's my idea for overtime. Make it sudden death, just like it already is, with the winner of the toss getting the ball on the 50 yard line. You only get three downs, not four, and the first team to score a TOUCHDOWN wins; no kicking or punting allowed. Also, the OT clock would start at zero and go forward as much time as needed to get that winning touchdown (this is just for the sake of recording how long of an OT was needed). As it stands now, here's now a typical OT goes:

    1. See team receive kickoff.
    2. See team get to about 40 something yards.
    3. See kicker kick field goal; ME WIN!!!!

    Far too easy IMO.

    According to this site:
    http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20041106/mathtrek.asp
    from 1974-2003:
52% of the time the team who won the overtime coin flip won the game
44% of the time the team who lost the overtime coin flip won the game
5% of overtime games ended in a tie.

That's hardly tantamount to the game being decided by a coin flip.

College OT is ridiculous. It's not football. It's some football-related spectacle, like the Home Run Derby is for baseball.

By the way, I agree that OT should be an entire 15 minutes. If they change the NFL OT to match the college OT... they'll lose a fan.
