Osnabruck taler - 1698 sede vacante

An interesting sede vacante taler from the Kuenker auction (DAV-5674). I suspect it was cleaned at some point (when looking at it with a loop), but I am still thrilled to own it.

Brent, very nice looking coin thaler. Everything that old has been cleaned at least once, but the details are still nice. My uncle was thinking of bidding on that, so I am glad he didn't cause he would have bid against you.

Cool...and it has a Chronogram on the reverse.

Alright--I'll bite, what is a chronogram?

Isn't a chronogram where words are used as numbers? or something like that.

The large letters, when re-ordered give the date of the coin in Roman numerals.

This was part 2 of my submission that just came back from across the street. I am thrilled to see the sede vacante on the label. The picture stinks since I do not have good lighting here.

  • Totally cool! I love examples like these, especially the AU grades.
