Vintage material going cheap?

Does anybody think that vintage mid-grade material has been going cheap on E-Bay?

Looks like a buyers market at the moment.

I'm looking to break up a 1954 graded set, and I'm thinking I'll hold out until a bette time?
Anyone know when that would be?
Nate

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

If you are not in business and/or making a market in cards,
now is not a good time to be a seller.

On the otherhand, if you want the money for something that
is more important to you - or might be more profitable - then
now is probably as good a time to sell as any.

  • I don't know about baseball sets, but I have been keeping an eye on football from 1948-1952 for a while.

I think that mid grade football cards from 1948-1952 have been selling at approximately the same level for the last 3 years. If anything, the 1952 Bowman Large and 1949 Leaf sets are selling higher now than in the last few years. High end stuff continues to draw a lot of money. Topps Feltbacks were selling really high for a while, even in mid grade, but it seems many more cards have been graded recently, and the prices have dropped. However, I think interest in that set has increased recently, driving the prices back up.

On occasion, a card will sell for a lot less than expected. I assume that's just by chance, because people either didn't see the card, or only few people were interested. Generally, though, I think the prices have remained constant for the last 3 years or so.

Yup, football cards have been pretty stagnant. I think that
is a good thing for buyers and probably still offers
some good value for long term investors in FB.

If the demand for FB ever starts to take off - I dunno
if it ever will - folks who have gotten in up to now
could do pretty well. Most people do not fully
understand how scarce some of the old FB really
is, because they have never been interested in
    looking for it.

Indeed, it is definetly a buyer's market. Especially once you get to 1980s/1990s stuff. And let's just say I'm taking full advantage of the opprotunity to get some complete insert sets from the mid-1990s (the 1994 Fleer inserts are my favorite) that I have fond memories of finding in packs back then. I mean, they're the same cards as before, right?

I have been trying to put together a 55 set in vg or better raw and can usually get low # commons for under $2 bucks a piece.

I have been finding '54 topps PSA 6 commons for $10 plus shipping fairly frequently lately. My best pickup recently from that set was a common PSA 7 for $10.50 plus shipping.

I'm convinced that October is a horrible month to sell any cards because many of the would-be bidders/buyers are camped out in front of their TVs watching baseball playoffs, pro football, college football, hockey, NBA preseason, NASCAR, golf.... I can hardly get any buying done myself!

Good point. I haven't done any selling in the last 3-4weeks, but my main raw guy's prices have been going thru the roof! I don't know why but I am bidding what I always do and am winning about 80% less auctions than I was 6 months ago.

I've made some pretty good buys lately in grade vintage football and baseball. It does seem that the Ebay market has been in a constant decline since late summer. There are few items that are going against the grain, but in general it's down.

Modern FB rookies from the past several years have been getting hammered.

  • It depends on the set. I have found that the mid-grade cards from the 50's baseball sets are at bargain prices. This is coming from a seller's point of view. The mid-grade cards from 1933 Goudey are also selling below SMR. The 1910 T3 set is selling for a significant premium over SMR. I think it just depends on the set. With that said, it is a great time to build a mid-grade 50's set.
