Is Social Security Number required to purchase coins

I recently attempted to purchase coins from the Royal Canadian Mint. When placing my phone order, I was told that in order to purchase coins, it was necessary to provide my social security number which I was very reluctant to do. I emailed the mint and asked the reason for this action. Below is their reply. Does anyone know if this is now a requirement for coins purchased from a mint outside the USA?

Dear Robert,

Thank you for contacting the Royal Canadian Mint.

At the outset, please accept our apologies for the delay in receiving a
timely reply. Due to an overwhelming volume of correspondence in
relation to the introduction of various new products, we have experienced
some difficulties in responding to our customers within our usual turn
around time.

In response to your inquiry, we wish to advise you that the Royal
Canadian Mint is now required by the Department of Treasury US Custom
Services to include the IRS number (Internal Revenue Service) or SSN (Social
Security Number ) on all of our customer documentation. These numbers
are recorded in the US Customs service computer system for customs
purposes only. For more information about this policy, we recommend that you
contact the US Custom Services.

Please contact us at your earliest convenience in order for us to
process your order for shipping.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate
to contact us at 1-800-267-1871 or at our web site

Sincerely,

Tiffany Fequet

I would call, BS. Call U.S. Customs and specifically ask why a number which is ONLY supposed to be used as a TAX NUMBER is required to purchase GOODS.

I wouldn't give a foreign entity (much less 99% Domestic) that number even if hell had frozen over.

They'll be cheaper in the aftermarket, anyway.
