What is a "Wankie"?

I just picked this foreign "coin" up in a small grouping and for the life of me couldn't tell you what it is! A larger than a half dollar but not as big as a silver dollar. It's thicker than an average coin and appears to be made of solid copper (weighs in a little over an ounce).

1972 and RHODESIA on the reverse.

Any suggestions?

The animal almost looks hand carved, kinda hobo nickelish.

Interesting you would say that, especially because I am pretty sure that animal is a cape buffalo. image

In all probability issued after the 1972 coal mine explosion at Wankie, Rhodesia. Thanks google!

I doubt any connection to the explosion. Looks like some sort of local token, though.

"Wankie" must be the diminutive of "Wanker", and I don't know what that means either, but some guy from the UK that I left negative feedback for on eBay kept calling me that in his emails image I kind of think it was a conjunction of "wonderful yankee" or some such thing image
