Anyone Collect Mardi Gras Doubloons?

These seem to be highly collectable and interesting (based upon my reading). Where did you get your
reference materials, and which eBay sellers or other dealers do you recommend, etc.?!
Many thanks in advance,
John

found anyone to trade with so they're kind of expensive to pay about 5c each
and sell at 4c while incurring postage costs. There were ways to mtigate the
cost by selling to theme collectors but this was highly labor intensive. There
are hundreds of different themes on these and they are popular with those who
collect them. There are also great designs and lots of advertising pieces.
You'll pay about 25c each to special order them and better pieces will cost $1
or more. It is important to put together as many as possible from bulk lots to
avoid this expense. You might find that you want to specialize in specific krewes
or designers as well. There are more than 100 beer related and nearly as many
military. There are good-fors and coupons.
I often wonder how many of these survived the flood. They were not well dis-
persed and any under water were probably lost permanently.

Thanks for the great information, it helps a lot. If I ever get to the point where I want to
trade, I'll keep you in mind. There is also a trading group (and a yahoo group) that I found -
let me know if you could use this info.

Sure. Thanks.
I'd love to bookmark them.
I'm sure that the earlier examples a worth a good bit.
Many of the krewes have been around for a long time.

Indeed I have (too many). In fact, I have the plastic baby from one glued to the top of my computer monitor! For the first couple of years after I moved to Boston (from New Orleans), I had my family mail me a king cake during Mardi Gras so I could share it with the Yanks up here. No one quite got the purpose, but they enjoyed it all the same.

<< <i>Does one count as a collection? >>
If so, I'm a big collector - I have three.
<< <i>Is there a website that has pics of these, like a catalog, not just random ones here and there? It seems like it could be interesting to collect the .999 silver ones. I even imagine ICG would grade them. >>
This was on one of the earlier links and there should be lots more pictures.
There are silver versions of lots of these. There are also gold and other off metal strikes. Most
come in various colors. The off metal issues are sometimes made in tiny quantities.
Update: I just found out Ox Silver means Oxidized Silver and is a silver coating on bronze.
