Roosevelt Dime 200???? D

I received this Roosevelt dime about 6 months ago. It only has three numbers on the date 200 and then the mint mark D. The picture may not show it clearly but the date and mint mark have no wear. So where did the fourth number go? Has anyone out there seen or heard of one like this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.image

  • First off welcome to the fourms, and second I dont know much about this stuff, but from what I'v heard the grease may have gotten stuck in the last # on the date and made it so it didnt stamp the coin.

It definitely looks like a strike-through grease. The die area where the last digit is was filled with grease when the planchet was struck, so no metal could go into that spot on the die. It's pretty nifty, at least. image

You might be able to ascertain the date by looking really carefully; there might be a 'ghost' image of the last number.

Yes, I have a P mint dime that looks similar. The 200 - P or D dime is either the earliest dime minted or was struck with some grease or other substance filling in that part of the die. image

    Welcome aboard.

There've not been a lot of changes in the dime in the past few years and the picture
could be bigger and sharper (reverse would help). I have a low confidence it's an '02.

  • Is there any increased value of this dime because of the error? What does anyone think it may be worth? And thank you & hello to everyone that welcomed me.image

What Joe and Leiana said. Struck through grease, probably. It happens. Not particularly rare, I wouldn't think- I've seen others. However, I think it would be worth a small premium. Obviously a pretty hefty premium over the ten-cent face value! Neat find.

Its value depends on finding a collector who appreciates it. image I paid about $10 for mine, it's probably worth $10 to $15 or so. I have an "812" Bust half, it's only worth a small premium over its value as a date. Nice find!

I'm fairly sure it's 2006-D. Probably struck through grease.
