I said I would never buy one of these!!!! and back from Yeti.. NEWP photo

OK I take it back I bought one, shame on me.... image

I could not resist this copper even if it is a Conder Token, and I don't know much about them so any comments are welcome.

I did a little research at the ANA library it appears to be a DH 14 from page 321 of the Dalton and Hammer, but it does not match the edge inscriptions exactly, mine
reads as follows " Payable at Geieldings Manchester". Any way it has great toning of light blue and purple. (not seen very well in these images)

Anyway had a good trip and lots more NEWPs to bore everyone with later on, I got tthe Conder at the NCNA show in Hickory NC, after that I spent 5 great days
in Colorado, and made a visit to the ANA museum and library. They have a very nice presentation on world currency and coins. The Bass collecion was also nice
to see even if it is lite side.

Beautiful Conder. I looked in my D&H and can't find that edge lettering either.

Gotta love the design of the Grocer's Arms! Heck, somebody even went to the trouble of engraving a fence in front of the East India House!

The edge lettering suggests a Manchester origin (See the design of Lancashire Manchester 127) but again DH does not show that edge variation. DH is pretty thick so maybe it's in there somewhere!

So, you liked the look of a coin, felt the price was reasonable, probably weren't concerned about AT or grade and might have come upon an unlisted variety. I hope you can live with yourself! image

Nice one. I got my first one-- a low grade piece just last week.

    Very nice Conder token!

Most likely you are reading the edge slightly wrong, a common problem on many tokens as the edges can be too small for the lettering.

Appears to be Lancashire Manchester #127 as rwyarmch stated. The edge should read "PAYABLE AT I. FIELDINGS MANCHESTER"

Yes that is it!, I read it without a magnifier as I had none at the ANA Library.

    Thanks! image

Don't feel too bad ... after saying I would never get one of those abominally large pieces of copper I broke down last weekend and purchased a 1797 cartwheel penny. Probably the best one I have seen locally, but darned hard to image ...

Hound, I knew before I opened the thread that you'd finally caved in to the lure of the Conder!!!! image

I always wondered what the reference to Huddersfield meant, ever since I heard the sarcastic Iron Maiden B-side song entitled "The Sheriff of Huddersfield" back in 1986.

I know not Conder tokens, but appreciate fine, aged copper and bronze in any form. Nice token!
