Older SCD flips...what exactly did the "UT" designation mean??

I know it meant untouched....but how did they get that designation?? Did you send wax packs/vending boxes to them and they opened them??? I just bought a 1968 Topps Oakland A's team card #554 in SCD Mint 9 for $10 and it has the "UT" designation. Figured it had to be worth what I paid...the old SCD graded cards were graded accurately from what I've read here on the boards.

You're actually right - SCD's sales pitch in their beginning was that they would accept unopened packs, open them and holder the cards within, earning it an "untouched" grade.

Cards were pulled out of the packs and handled with special white gloves so they were never in contact with human skin.

This is generally true, but just like SGC you have to watch the centering. Your card looks like it may be too far OC to get a 9 from PSA. I would expect it to get an 8 though. Either way 10 bucks seems like an OK price to me.
