Report from searching through $100 face cents

rec78rec78 Posts: 5,965 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hello, I have just finished searching through $100.00 face value cents that i got from the bank.
Here are the results-
Bronze 1982+earlier about 2875. i only counted about 1/2 of them and estimated the rest.
Wheats--not really too many here- about 25 total
Canadian--not many about 12
S mints - 8 all dated 1968-1973 except for one that was a 1925-S? (How'd that get in there?)
I am just North of Philadelphia and we never get many S-mints here.

Ok the best coins i found were:
1. 1968-D DDR (2) yes i found two of these but they seem to be different dies. Not bad as there were approximately only 15-20 1968-D's in whole $100.00
2. A very choice BU 2000 wide AM cent
3. a 1940 wheat cent that may be a DDO
4. a 1920 Canadian cent.
5. a whole bunch of cents with reverse die breaks mostly 1990-1993 dates. 20-25-total
I do not know what these are worth but it was fun just searching--You never know what you will find. I surprised at the number of au-unc coins still floating around from as far back as 1974. Dates prior to 1974 seem to be more worn. I find one BU 1961.

    Cool!

    Roll searching is fun. image

I never looked through that many cents at a time before, though. That must have taken quite a while!

Thanks for reporting your findings. image

Actually it took about 3 months---i did a few rolls whenever i felt the urge. When i was your age i would look through a $50 bag a day sometimes--kept my dad busy going to a bunch of different banks and it kept me busy and out of trouble. I used to average about a 2 bags a week. Thanks, bob

you can expect to find about 25% at best of the copper cents. this percentage is decreasing each month.

Thanks for posting your results. The numbers aren't too surprising except
you got more copper than I'd have expected and a few less high grade pre-
    '65 coins.

I've got a horde of about 20-30 lbs of pennys that have accumulated on various dressers over the years and I've been throwing them in a library bag in the closet. My 6 year old just got his first penny books and we've started searching them. We've been through a couple of cups of them so far and what strikes me is that since many new pennys were thrown in there, we're finding lots of penny's from the 80's and 90's with almost full mint luster. The one that really suprised me so far is the 59 with the new copper shine.

Not much else, just a couple of wheats so far.

I retired two years ago and finally have the time to look through the 20000 cents I had put away in the years 1966-1974. Just an accumulation of wheat and early LM cents. I am surprised by the amount of coins having full mint luster. Best, so far is a 1939-s cent. Also found a 1909-s in terrible shape. Keeps me busy and I find the thrill of discovery is still there, even though I obviously have seen these before. I had 'forgotten' I had put away a BU roll of 1955-s and 1936-s cents!!!! Most of the cents are just accumulated junk, but it is like opening bags of coin that were avg. circ. in 1974. The latest date is 1974. Anybody want 6 rolls of rusted steel cents?

    Cool finds..thanks for sharing. image

I just went through $5 worth and only pulled about 20 copper and 1 wheat. I found 8 minor DDRs, 2 real nice "wavy" DDRs and a 2005 with some significant doubling of the 11th column. Also found a BU 1984 with a small cud. image

Oh and I totally ripped the bank. There was a dime in the one roll so I earned and extra 9 cents in my hour of looking. image

My six and eight year old boys have been busy working on my thirty year hoard of pennies. Keeping the brass and rolling the rest. The six year old did ten rolls the other day. He'd count out five stacks of ten and roll them up..the funny part is when he was done all his rolls were different lengths image

Cool finds and thanks for the report. I enjoy reading about what people find in rolls. The percentage of copper cents vs. zinc ones is interesting - I would have expected fewer copper examples.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
