ASE Anniv. sets shipping damage. Uh Oh! One set going back.

I ordered 10 sets and I did open mine (as you've probably seen in the photos thread). In all the sets the capsules were loose in the boxes rather than seated in the holders. In one set 2 of the capsules actually came open and I had loose coins which got marks on them and the edges of the capsules broke. Another set had a chipped capsule but coin is fine and another set had a reverse proof with a big spot on it that looks like a tiny piece of debris got into the capsule and contaminated the surface. After rearranging the damaged coins and capsules it came to ONE perfect reject set (3 bad coins/3 bad capsules) that I need to return.

The rest are all great even though the capsules weren't seated.

Anyone else?

(I know.....another ASE set thread. What can I say? It's the flavor of the week.)

Can you imagine the grades you would have gotten if you had sent in the unopened package to get the first stike designation? image

seriously, that is one major disadvantage to the unopened box send in for grading. that could have been a real mess.

Was there any visable damage to the shipping box? Or could you tell they were lose At all before you opened them?

I didn't open my first 3 sets, that came Friday morning. I took them to my friendly B+M coin shop, to be sent to PCGS for me Saturday.
They should be shipping to PCGS tomorrow. They are the first I ever sent in, so wish me luck.

While I was in the shop, some one brought in a set, opened. I was able to get a look at his reverse proof. image

I like them even better than the gold reverse proof. NOT that I don't love the Gold one I have.

I received 3 sets, and not a single coin was seated in the proper location when I opened them.

These baastards were bounced around a lot, and there should have been some sort of wadding that would pin the coins down in the plastic bubbles.

Nope and Nope. Box looked fine and contents were not packed tight enough to know if coins were loose in their boxes.

I suspect there will be a few that send unopened boxes that get a dud coin back here and there. In my case 10%. Let's hope that IS NOT the norm or we'll have a another whole round of angry Mint bashing threads and Coin World letters/articles.

Those of you that sent or will send unopened boxes in, I suggest asking for a minimum grade of 69 so if they don't make the cut due to damage in shipping or spots, you can return them to the Mint.

My sister and I just received our ASE Anniv. sets and all 3 coins were loose. I was lucky the coins and capsules were perfect in my set. My sister's set had one damaged capsule but the coins are fine. Why would the mint place these loose? Did they do that with the gold and the 2 coin anniversary sets?

Ouch! I really think that anyone who got them like that should write to the Mint and Coin World. Bringing attention to their careless packaging (done by a third party contractor, right?) might help those of us that aren't getting the sets until December. image

All three coins in my ASE set were loose and bouncing around too, but luckily no damage.

Maybe the Mint wants people to open there sets and actually enjoy their coins.image

The Mint saw too many people getting PF70s and they didn't want that to be the expected norm, so they have found a way to "fix" that image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Us folks scheduled to receive the sets in December will probably get all of the REJECTS the others return!

I was unable to cancel an order for five 2 Coin sets and received them in three separate shipments- two in a box , two in a box and one in a box. All ten coins were loose in their respective cases with intact coin capsules. However the coins would grade no higher than 68 IMHO and one of the ASE's looked different than the rest on the reverse--there was intense almost white frosting on the coin except for the 40 to 50 breaks in the frosting. UUUUUUgly!

Back to the mint distribution center and I feel sorry for the person that receives those!!!
And I ain't lying this time.

You are crazy to reject them and send them back. You will get your money back and that is it. Even damaged you will get more on Ebay than the mint is going to give you back.

I have standards and I wouldn't/couldn't sell those to anyone without disclosing their condition and if I didn't like them, I'm sure someone else would feel the same way and I don't want to hassle with shipping coins back and forth and back and forth.

Edited to say these were two piece gold and silver sets.
And I ain't lying this time.

    Tell me,
If you ask for a minimum grade. And the coins don't come up to it. Do they still charge full price?
Or can you say, "If there is any shipping damaged Don't grade the damaged set". And not be charged any grading fees for that set?.

This brings up an interesting scenario given the fact that you cannot see the sets before submitting to PCGS.
