Terrell Owens tells of practice quarrel with passing game coordinator
October 14, 2006
By Todd Archer The Dallas Morning News
IRVING, Texas — If all eyes Sunday weren't going to be on Terrell Owens and passing game coordinator Todd Haley after last week's sideline interaction in Philadelphia, they definitely will be now.
On his weekly radio show, Owens acknowledged that he had an argument with Haley on Wednesday after arriving late to practice.
Owens said he felt ill and was in the bathroom when practice started. When he arrived, according to Owens, Haley cursed at him.
"I felt like he disrespected me when I'm coming out of the bathroom because my stomach is hurting," Owens said on his show, adding that Haley had a dust-up that day with a defensive coach during practice.
"I get to the field maybe a couple of minutes late, and he's calling me out in front of everybody, and it wasn't even called for. That was unnecessary, when I tell him what was going on and he says he didn't care."
Owens said later in practice he apologized to coach Bill Parcells for being late.
"I told him I went to use the rest room and told him what was going on with my system and he was like, 'All right, just try to get out here a little earlier,' and that was it," Owens said on his show.
According to sources, Owens and Haley met Thursday and quashed the incident, but Owens did not sound happy. Last year in Philadelphia, he told then-offensive coordinator Brad Childress to speak to him only when spoken to. In San Francisco, he had a sideline argument with coordinator Greg Knapp.
Owens said he and Haley, who is sarcastic and fiery, have tried to work at their relationship since he signed with Dallas.
"Other than him being my coach and me being respectful and him being respectful to me, as a player, outside of that there will be nothing else," Owens told his radio listeners. "No other dialogue. There will be no more friendly nothing because I don't trust anybody like that. I will go out and practice hard. . . . Right now, we are merely co-workers and that's it."
Assistant coaches are not available to media, according to Parcells' rules.
Wednesday's exchange is not expected to affect Owens' playing status for Sunday's game against Houston, as he took his usual practice reps. Parcells declined to talk about Owens.
Owens has expressed frustration with his role. He has 17 catches, 232 yards and one touchdown. For the first time since 2000, Owens has gone three straight games without a touchdown catch.
On the sideline at Philadelphia, Owens, who was held to three catches for 45 yards, was seen mouthing, "Why am I here?" and had several animated discussions with Haley.
On Wednesday, Owens again questioned why he was with the Cowboys, citing his lack of involvement. According to the play-by-play sheets from the first four games, Owens has been Drew Bledsoe's intended target 44 times, most on the offense. Terry Glenn has been thrown to 29 times.
Since signing a three-year, $25-million deal with the Cowboys that included a $5 million signing bonus, Owens' time with the Cowboys has not gone smoothly.
He missed a team meeting and rehab session Aug. 25, resulting in a $9,500 fine.
While he has not missed a regular-season game, he missed 21 practices during training camp because of a hamstring injury, he broke his right hand Sept. 17 against Washington and he suffered an accidental overdose of painkillers Sept. 27.
"At this point, I am really frustrated," Owens told listeners. "I am not trying to be a distraction down here in Dallas by any means."
