Crossover from Collector to Connoisseur

Crossover from Collector to Connoisseur

Numismatic: adj. 1.of coins or medals 2.having to do with currency 3. of numismatics

Numismatics: n pl. 1.the study of collection of coins, medals, etc. numismatist n.

There are those who sit and watch late night TV from the comfort of their recliner and purchase individual coins, runs of mint/proof sets, complete Silver Eagle sets all in varying grades, Statehood Quarter series in mint condition, gold plated, platinum plated and what ever else is “hot” that week from shows like HSN, QVC and others. Those type of buyers let others do all the leg work for them, get the coins home and are now classified as coin collectors. ( I like to call those novice rookies “Instant Collectors”)
Others search their pocket change, save what they don’t have and call themselves coin collectors. (Casual Collectors) Still others search e-bay for deals, bid, win, get the coin or coins home and call themselves coin collectors. (next level because at least you are picking and choosing yourself, we’ll call you semi-pro‘s)
Individuals go to dealers or to coins shows, make their purchases, talk about coins all day, go home and they are coin collectors. (upper deck collectors…getting closer to the “Sky Boxes“) Still others watch live internet auction houses and place bids on prospective graded and slabbed coins hoping for a shot at a realy nice coin. They too are coin collectors, albeit upper tier level discriminating collectors.(experts)
Speculators are in it for cash flow/investment with the “flipping” of precious metals and or rarity…those who do this are classified as coin collectors. (Short Term)
Yet others join societies linked directly to the hobby of coin collecting for upcoming information, preservation and the sharing of coin collecting experiences. (hard core with a mix from above)
Some do a little or all of the above while others pick and choose what niche or level they want to submerge themselves into. Every aspect of the afore mentioned keeps this hobby alive and thriving so the notion of it being just about all positive remains.

My question is:

When does the crossover (is there a crossover?)from coin collector (numismatic) evolve into the study (numismatist) of coins? If a division exists with varying distinct levels, how do you know where you as a hunter/gatherer fit into this equation at any given point?

I guess you could add on, how do other hunter/gatherers perceive the level you have attained?

Interesting question/issue for discussion. I think that my approach has been to identify the people who are indeed connoisseurs and learn from them.

My favorite type of "Connoisseur" are the ones who enjoy the process of learing all that they can about the object/topic they are interested in and participating in that area (acquiring, holding, upgarding, etc. all while studying and learning more) without the need to publicly and condescendingly tout one's "Connoisseurship" to others.

"Collector" to me means some or all of the persons you described above. "Connoisseur" to me means that someone (i.e. a collector) has gone beyond the bounds of being a "collector" to a place where he or she stands out above others in one's knowledge and accomplishment in a specific area/endeavor (i.e. coin collecting).

Defining/describing when one ceases being just a "collector" and becomes a "Connoisseur" is beyond me. So I will leave that task to others who reply to this post.

I think that there are two phases to the development of a collector. The knowledge chase comes first. In the above examples, this is what separates the casual collectors from the elite collectors. Once a collector has a high level of knowledge, the challenge is to develop "taste." Informed individuals with qualities like "strong opinions", "cultural awareness", or "aesthetic sense" become connoisseurs.

A collector with only one half of this development can still create an amazing collection-- The "Things that are rare" collection on one side; the "Things that are cobalt blue" collection on the other side. The union of these mindsets creates someone who is not afraid to pave a path into a new area of rarities, despite past auction results or trends.
