1882 O die crack Morgan, has anyone seen this one?

This newly acquired 1882 Morgan is a nice looking mint state, very mushy strike. I bought the coin because of the strong die crack on the obverse running from Liberty's hair through the U to the rim. An additional die crack runs from third left star to the second right star. The obverse has a strong clash with about four degrees of rotation, and clash marks evident behind Liberty's cap. Another crack runs through Liberty's cap down into the hair at the back.

I can't attribute this coin from the literature. Any ides, or is this a non-VAM interesting die crack?

Rick

Looks pretty close to a 17A?

I concur with the 17A...heck, they could almost be the same coin.

Yeah, definitely 17A. I just shipped one to a collector yesterday in an NGC 64. I think it's a pretty cool variety because there is so much going on.... Die chips, die clash with letter transfer, die gouges.

Thanks folks. I like the coin. What's this coin going for today?

VamGuy could probably answer in reality, but there is one owner on eBay who thinks bidding should start at $499 for an unattributed one image The vamworld write-up seems to make it out to be somewhat rare - so based on your other post, where you averaged $35 ea for the 4 VAMs, I think you're doing Ok.

    eBay VAM 17a????

Maybe I should sell the ebay guy this coin at a 25% discount eh? Thanks for the information.

The link to that auction is funny because I actually sold that coin to the current seller. That's my VAM attribution sticker on the front of the slab. image

But the coin in the auction is an 1878-S VAM 17A, not a 1882-O VAM 17A. Different animal.

The coin I shipped yesterday was discounted to a regular client at $125.

VAM-17A. I sent one to Leroy a while back so he could add the U crack to the description, which he surprisingly declined. Here is my description to him.

    1882-O PCGS MS64 (73562674)
VAM-17A. This late die state has a remarkable hair to rim break through the first U of PLURIBUS. I have two like this and another collector checked his 17A and confirmed it as well.

I used that coin in this write-up I did at vamworld.

Leroy does as he wishes. I would think the U die crack as the first indicator on this coin, it jumps at you without aid of magnification. That's a great writeup John.

Thanks. That crack is a good PUP (pick-up point) for those who now know it. image

Leroy said there wasn't a wide enough break to add it or make a daughter designation. You should see some of the others (a disastrous 1890-CC comes to mind) that he also turned down. He is trying hard to rein in the VAM proliferation by considering only the most significant ones. I have spoken/written/posted plenty on where I think this will ultimately go.
