Alderly Collection of Pennies . . . .

Has anyone heard any news about this upcoming sale. It's being mentioned on Cookes website.

Is it to be similar to the Nicholson/C. Cooke formats?image

Yes, the thought is that they will bew auctioned as per the Colin Cooke farthings.

Hooboy, another auction destined to separate us all from our money. Lessee: house, pennies, house, pennies,...

You're right, they haven't sold yet. Lousy buyer's market. image

  • I understand that it will have some of the GREAT RARITIES, as well as being one of the finest in condition......

I know I need a few of them, but they will probably be out of my price range......

Do you have any further details as to which great rarities will be offered?
  • Many of the rare Freeman varieties, including a 1933

A 1933 pattern penny was offered for sale earlier this year on the same website and another appeared at auction. Competition for the coins in this sale will undoubtedly be fierce.
  • I've no doubt about that...... The collection is very high quality.....

RE: the 1933, I don't know if it is a pattern or circulation strike.... either way it will be exciting......

Are you acquainted with either the collector or the collection?
  • I knew of the collector, but not by name till this week....
I know the quality of the coins that he has been buying....
I was told BY the collector of the sale, but I haven't been given leave to release his name, and I'd prefer not to betray that confidence.....

Good luck to you in the bidding. Hope that you are able to pick up some of the pennies (including those rare Freeman varieties) that you are pursuing.

Does the scope extend to Victorian copper vs. the Freeman # bronzes being discussed?

I don't have that detail and RBC appears to have more info than me. The 1933 is one of the Lavrillier pieces to my understanding. I would expect a bloodbath that will make the farthings seem civilized by comparison.

I understand that there will probably be some coppers... I heard of an UNCIRCULATED 1827 penny involved....

I would expect that too.... Look what happened at DNW with Laurie Bamford's collection.....

Interesting and potentially quite costly. I would not be surprised to see 7Jaguars prediction of "a bloodbath that will make the farthings seem civilized by comparison" come to pass.
