Best online "Buy It Now" purchase you've had?

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,650 ✭✭✭✭✭

Ebay, Heritage, and several major online dealers all offer a "Buy Now" feature in some capacity. While many of these items are strongly priced, tempting people to skip over them, there have to be examples of grossly underpriced BIN coins that have been cherry-picked by board members. Care to show off your best "Rip It Now" purchase and explain why it was such a steal?

I don't have a picture, but I picked up an 1829 N-7 (Wheelspokes, later die state, R4) large cent on ebay a few years back, a decent F/VF coin, for $29 BIN plus shipping, on ebay. It's probably worth $75 or so, not $75,000, but I guess it's a rip. That's the best I can do.

I looked at the picture and they were Silver eagles.

The best BIN i ever got was a 2004 proof platinum 1/4 oz eagle earlier this year for $300. Banked about $1500 bucks on that baby. It was up for about 7 minutes before I hit it.

Cherried an 1888-S VAM-13, new variety that got an R-6 rarity rating and I-5 interest rating form Leroy Van Allen, not long ago as a buy it now on eBay. A 1964 PCGS SMS 65RD cent was a neglected lot I got as an after auction purchase at Heritage. I seem to recall that might have been in the first auction where they offered that feature.

Last week an ebayer had a PCGS MS69 coin starting at $69 with a buy it now of $169. Since the coin has typically been selling for $95 to $115 no-one bid on it. One hour before the auction ended I put in the minimum $69 bid and won the coin. Lesson to the seller know the fair market price and don't set your BIN so high no-one will ever use it.

1830 LM-11/V14 capped bust half dime in NGC AU-53 for $277 including tax and shipping from Heritage. The coin is a high R-6 (there wasn't even one available in the Reiver auction at Heritage earlier this year) and the second finest known. Since I already had cherried an F-12 example of this same die marriage off of ebay, I traded it to another collector for a few half dime die marriages I needed and some upgrades.

    When in doubt, don't.

It was modern crap, but I picked up a ms67 2003 D sac for about $25. They typically go for $150+ So it may not be a rip for hundreds of dollars or even thousands, but I picked up a coin at 1/6 of its usual cost!

Did anyone end up scoring on the Superior Auctions SNAFU over the $1.00 BIN? There were some real potential rips there.

I've had a few good BINs from Superior, but they never ship the coins. They always claim it's a mistake...

A seller listed 30 ASE's pretty cheap and I jumped all over them. Paid instantly and patted myself on the back. Long story short; never got them but did finally get my money back from PP.

Most recent was a three coin 1965-1967 SGS graded SMS Kennedy set for $33 on eBay. The 1967 graded MS67DCAM at PCGS and sold for $700. I spent the other two coins.

I picked up my clipped 1922 Plain cent for a Buy It Now of $325, it was in an ANACS Net VF Fine Details holder. I've been offered a lot more but that coin is going to the grave with me. Earlier this year I snagged a raw 1936 DDO#1 Cent, the seller called it XF but it looked nicer, for a $65 Buy It Now. PCGS graded it AU55 and I sold it recently for more than $600.

I needed a 1971-S PR69DCAM Roosie and waited 3 years to buy one when I came across a 7 coin lot on heritage that had a run from 1968-1975 all 9DC. I always told Keith LaBrozzi that I would snag one cheaper then he did at $120 (He purchased his a long time ago)I bought the lot for something like $300. I put the 71-S in my set, cherried the other 6 (Ended up switching 2 coins), sold the rest on the bay for >$500 including the 71-S PR69CAM I had made that was in my set. The 1971-S 9DC ended up in my set as a 100% FREE coin. Actually I was paid >$200 to own the coin.
