The obverse has been harshly cleaned. There are plenty of horizontal streaks all over the obverse, especially on the torso of the device.

I've learned a few things from the TPGS. I've learned from coins which crossed into higher grades when I didn't expect it, I've learned from coins that didn't cross at the grade I so wished, I even learned from coins that should have crossed but didn't, but I learned the most from coins which were bodybagged.

I learned from ANACS to look closely for any small spots of PVC. This lead me to learn how to safely remove it with acetone-- Good lesson, learned cheaply with a happy (now slabbed) ending.

I think the reverse was probably cleaned as well though maybe not quite as harshly. Look at the spots of remaining "stuff" around the protected areas of "united states of america" for example.

When I first started collecting I had a 1909 VDB that looked flawless. I dont collect a lot of copper and did not notice that the color was a little off. It looked more pale orange than red. I got a BB back with questionable color. I took it to a dealer and asked a few questions. He said yes it is questionable color and has probably been dipped in lemon juice or some other dilute acid. I learned a lot from that BB. The coin still looks great to me and sits in my Dansco 7070. It is starting to retone and is taking on a more "red" color to it.

Some of my greatest grading lessons have come from studying my bodybagged coins. image

Absoloutely! I keep any bodybag coins for future reference too. I jumped in with both feet trying to get some early bust halves graded. The ones that were bagged are good to go back to and look at now and then.

I've learned a lot from bodybags -- what skillful whizzing looks like, tolerance for hairlines, market acceptable toning, etc. I've also learned what coins to try again.

I have definitely learned a great deal from TPG bodybags. One thing which I have missed several times, is the retoned look of a cleaned coin. But, one thing that makes it difficult still, is the "lightly" cleaned coins that rest in holders right now.

image now why would someone clean only one side of the coin????

Just food for thought. in a Dansco Style Album you slide the plastic window open and closed, over and over again. If your coin is too close to the plastic could it wear and or scratch only on the obverse?

Yes, I've learned that sometimes coins need more than one trip before they get graded.

I've mostly learned who not to buy raw coins from again.
    When in doubt, don't.

Yes, on the high points of the devices ... not in the fields next to the devices.

Sometimes they can arise from a bodybag. Then when they get slabbed, your only hope of stopping them is with a wooden stake.
