1962 Noddy Set (by Noddy Sweet Cigarettes/Como Confectionary) Info. anyone?

Can anyone add some information on this set? I picked-up this set (a complete 50 card set). It is not listed in Murray's Card Catalogue, according to Leon at Creamofcards.com (a well known European dealer in cigarette cards).

Any opinions?

  • Bob,

Best I can tell this Noddy fella was a European cartoon like character that appeared in books early-20th cent. I did a quick search and found more about Noddy and his playmates than about the actual cards. But a few places did say that the characters were displayed in a 1962 50 card set of cigarette trading cards. There's got to be some sort of correlation between the character Noddy (if I'm indeed right about that) and the cigarette company.

Actually, the more I write the more confused I am. Everything I just said is probably wrong. Sorry image

Hard to tell, but I think it says COMO CONFECTIONARY PRODUCTS. That would make this a candy card set and not cigarettes, which might explain it's absence from the Murray guide.

I grew up reading Noddy books (English household). He was to kids in England what Bugs Bunny was to kids here. I've never seen the cards before but I"m sure they were quite popular in their time.

    A bit of trivia-
The character in the middle top card was called a Golliwog. It's now considered very racist ("wog" is a derogatory term, roughly equal to the N word) and can no longer be found in the books or in licensed Noddy toys.
