Hey, when you can break the set down into incriments it makes you feel like you're making strides. Sets like that are a doozie, anything to keep you moving along !
Im approaching 25% in my Mattingly master set, which has just around 600 cards. When I get there it will give me a sense of satisfaction, so I know just where you are coming from.

I am at just under 25% on the Favre master set which is just short of 1100 cards. There are another 5000+ potential cards out there to be added to the set. These are tough sets to get off the ground on. But it helps when you are a huge fan of the player. As I have said in other post about these modern master player sets...it more a labor of love to keep going. The only problem is the grading fees. I have about 1000 Favres sitting at home that I am putting together to send in at some time. But even with a $5 special that comes to $5000 plus the shipping. What I wonder is if some of us couldnt band together and try to get cheaper grading where we submitt so many cards together a month, ala dsl, 4sharp etc. I have a group that goes in on PSA/DNA autos, which saves us $5/card if we send in 100+ at a time. The only problem would be all the work that would entail sending such large orders every month.

I feel your pain. I too have started one of the monster sets (Griffey Jr Master) at 2828 cards it is going to be a long road. I try and pick what ever I can on E-Bay and a few other places but inevitably I am going to have to submit a very large portion of the cards myself. Guess I'll have to wait on monthly specials and do bulk submissions once in awhile. Looks like I'll break the 5% milestone this month and try for another 2 or 3 % each month.

Since you guys are diehard master player set collectors then what are your criteria for basic player sets?
I've had a hard time seeing the reasoning of some of the additions lately to basic player sets. Does a 87' Topps Mini Leaders or 88' Topps Big Issue belong in a basic set? What about Post Cereal cards? How about a European or collegiate card? To me they aren't major card issues that belong in a basic player set but apparently PSA seems to think so.
To include those kinds of cards in master sets I can understand without a doubt but the basic set I see them as a real stretch.

I don't see how any of those belong in a basic set.
To me, a 'basic set' card should be one that was available nationwide in packs through normal distribution.
No inserts, no numbered cards, no leader cards, no mini's or big issues, none of that junk belongs in a basic set. Anyone who is pushing them to be included is simply trying to boost their standing in the basic set category.
