Who buys hobby boxes to hold?

Based on my budget, I have been buying (pre-order) hobby boxes to hold in hopes they will increase in value.
I've bought mostly 2006 FB because of the rookie class.
Wonder if there are others who do the same and what you're eyeing nowadays.

If ya get lucky with a rookie year - and the prices jumps?
Then what? Ya have to be careful - probably best to sell when you see major appreciation?
Since, todays hot rookies may be tomorrows Burger King cooks.
Just a thought.
If ya want a good example - just go back to the early 90s with O'neal and A. Hardaway - hot as hell. Now? I would say cold as Bill Clinton's wife!
Now, if ya had picked up a case with Pujol's RC? Now ya talkin.
I wish you luck.

I'm under the impression that it's a tad safer to sell an upopened hotbox with the potential of pulling a hot rookie.
That's why I bought UD's The Cup. I bought it at $300 and it's up around $500.
If/when Crosby or Ovechkin get in the playoffs, it'll go up and even more if they ever win a Stanley Cup.
I agree that it is speculation but I find it safer to sell than busting them open and regretting it later.

<< <i>It is ok to smoke and rip though. As long as you do it alone, you become quite careful with cardboard. >>
But don't you end up trying to build a bong out of the empty wax box?
As Denis Leary once said, "The problem with marijuana isn't that it leads to other drugs. The problem with marijuana is that it leads to f&$%ing carpentry."

<< <i>Not me, I need to open them right away to replace the empty wax boxes I wear on my feet around the house.
Knuckles,
Do you crumble up all the wrappers to act as padding?

Yeah but as we now know they made a TON of product which is why most of that stuff from back then will never be worth much of anything.
<< <i>I have been holding a few 1975 Topps wax and a few from the early 80's so people keep doing your box busts so I can retire early! >>
Now that's willpower!
2 boxes of 2002 BDP
1 case of 2004 BDP plus 2 more boxes
6 boxes of 2004 Elite Extra Edition
1 case of 2006 Bowman Chrome
All baseball, hobby boxes. Anyway, it was plain to me that at pre-sell or on release these boxes were undervalued. Obviously, I wish I had bought more of 2002 BDP, but I had fun ripping most of what I bought. The Elite boxes held steady at $50-55 for the first 2 years, and I thought about selling to buy one $300 item, but this summer it seems they finally started drying up, some names started popping out, and they started to rise finally, hitting $75 or so at peak, and next year should be solidly there or higher. The 2004 BDP hasn't moved as much mainly due to higher production, missing several of the bigger rookies so far, and all the extra competition from the other rookie products (Elite, SP Prospects, Hot Prospects, Bowman Sterling). I pre-ordered the 2006 Chrome for about $740 dlvd so that was in the black as soon as it was released (currently they go for $925-950). If I was to sell today, I'd make money on all these guys, and it took no effort beyond having the will power not to rip (I can't say those 2004 loose boxes will see the new year). I wouldn't get rich, and some of them wouldn't give me a huge margin, but these were all extremely low risk items. I could've left that money in CDs earning 3% or whatever it was at the time, but this was better.
I was going to buy a case of SP Authentic football from this year but I need the cash and don't want to put it on a card. As the season has evolved, I'm not completely sold on this rookie class. I admit I bit on the Bush hype, so I figured he'd be doing something spectacular. Young and Leinart I'm surprised to see starting already, but their performance is surprising in only exactly how bad it's been (How can you throw the ball 21 times and total 63 yards? That's got to be some kind of record.). I knew Maroney would be a good sleeper, but his best cards were overpriced for sleeper status before the season, and the lesser cards weren't worth the trouble. But I don't think a case of 2006 will be a bad pick like that one year (SP Authentic is a pretty solid pick for FB from year to year, but I think 2002 was a real dud, never got over release pricing). If no one really busts out, waiting till after the season then buying something when next year's draft class comes around may be a good move. Then in another year or two, when this year's guys are taking over, it'll spike back way up.
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25

Sure do and the gum battles foot odour.
I have good will power as I don't find it fun to rip open boxes of stuff I kind of know the content of.
I have 1988 Fleer Update sets from over 10 years ago safe in my closet because I thought John Smoltz would be a HOF (This is still within reason). 1987 Fleer Update Glossy because of Maddux.
I do own the 2004 BDP because Joe Stalin advised me that these are good stuff. They did go up in value since I bought a box. I have no desire to rip it because I know it will lose value. I like it the way it is. Sealed boxes have their own aesthetic beauty.
I also have sealed boxes of Garbage Pail Kids (the new versions) and a case of Superman Returns cards (sealed).
With that said. I am pretty good about keeping the stuff untouched and in a safe environment, but I don't always know what to buy. In fact, I have been out of the loop and have not bought anything. Should I buy the 2006 BDPs--whey are they coming out?

I am actually going to use some will power and not open it this time. Then again I said that last time I had this much unopen stuff and along came a rainy Wednesday after work, a 6 pack, and a pizza and it was all gone in one night so who knows.
