Susan B. Anthony dollars ugly?

Why does everyone seem to think that the design of the SBA dollars is ugly?
I'm asking because I think it's my favorite design on a modern-type coin (especially the reverse.)
I also really like the eleven-sided polygon around the edges of the coin.

Yes.......I can't explain it. It just is. But the Ike can keep her company. Though rarity has no effect on ugliness.

I would argue that none of the people (except maybe on the Sac dollars) is remotely attractive.
I just like the clean lines, and detail on the SBA coins. I'm surprised more people don't agree.
P.S. Thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome to this forum!

The coin is ugly because until then all women on coins were sexy with their hair down, not in a severe bun looking like a constipated librarian.

Best thing I can say is the coin is "life-like" in it's portrayal.
The reverse is just a scaled-down version of the Ike reverse.
Now where is my sweater?
The reverse is one of my favorite US coin designs. The obverse is OK and I like the look especially
on the '79 issue but SBA was not a very attractive woman in her middle years. She was a little hand-
some when younger and matured well but in between there are few pictures where she looks attract-
ive. The first drawings she had been prettied up a little but the family balked and wanted her depict-
ed as she was. They got there way and it's a handsome coin of a less than beautiful woman.
If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!

<< <i>If they would have used the flowing hair design on the obverse, it would have been the best looking clad coin (although that is not saying much) >>
Yea, verily.
I was really disappointed when they ditched Liberty for Susie B.
I also remember a cartoon of a guy looking at an SBA with a disappointed look and saying, "Ah, man-- I thought it was going to be a Susan Anton dollar." Does anyone else even remember Susan Anton?

2-- The geometric border is a crappy compromise to the proposed shaped coin.
3-- The obverse is crazy! mintmark, cameo broach, and designers initials form a line. 'In god we trust' is stuffed between two stars, and shaped around her chin.
Not a bad coin as long as you only look at the reverse.
I liked Miss Liberty better.

I once spoke with Frank Gasparro, in his office, about the Anthony portrait. He said that he had suggested giving her a pleasant expression, but this had been refused by Mint Director Stella Hackel Sims and the family of Miss Anthony.

<< <i>welcome and to answer your question, its because it looks like granny from the beverly hillbillies on the coin. the edges are nice however. JMO >>
Granny was much better looking!
Actually, a hillbilly (mountain person) may be an appropriate subject for a US coin!
<< <i>You guys think SA in ugly.... wait until we have Hillery's mug on a coin. That will be one coin I will not touch with a 10 pole! >>
Jeeze, that just made me throw-up a little in my mouth.
I like the coin for many reasons: I remember as a kid when it came out, it was unique to me, a non-collector. I also remember the talk about wide and narrow borders, and this caused me to keep an eye out for these varieties, again, at the time a kid who was not in to numismatics. In a way I have the SBA to thank for my current interest in the hobby. The “P” mint mark was used on the coin for only the second time in U.S. coinage history, second only to the war nickels. The SBA also has the distinction of having the longest period of time in between being minted 1981 – 1999, one year longer than the Morgan dollar. Yeah, I like the coin.

<< <i>Maybe the Marshall Islands or Liberia will help us out by issuing Susan Anton dollars and leave SBA to the USA. >>
No doubt. Have they done Elvis and Marilyn yet (and I don't mean Costello and Manson)?
BTW, here is a coin I got recently under melt that is Liberian. Posted it on the dark side board to find out more about it but it is too slow over there.

I dunno. She looked like a man....she acted like a man...she blamed all the world's problems on men...she wanted to get paid like a man...she wanted to vote like a man...she said black men threatened the safety of white women...she never married a man...she hung around with a woMAN...think she might have been involved in some of that lesbianism stuff. She was sexist, a racist, an all around troublemaker. She was arrested & convicted and told the judge FU...a common criminal has no place on American coinage.
<< <i><<<Dog are you sure that Susan B Anthony was a woman? I think it's actually Ben Franklin in drag! Was she alive back in old Ben's days? Man the Coin looks good but the pic of SBA is horrible. >>>
