Cuds on Barber Coinage

Are these features common on this series? Can they add or take away any value??? Thx for your assistance.

I haven't seen to many cuds on Barber coinage (quarters and halves), I don't think it would add any value to the coin though.

I've never seen a true cud that actually took away value to a coin.

Barber cuds are very rare and worth a premium.

In 40 years of collecting Barbers, I have never see a cud.

As a matter of fact any miss struck Barber is quite rare; although the dimes don't carry a huge premium, I have never seen an off center quarter and only two off center halves. I once owned an 1897-S AU 55 half in an ANACS holder that had a partial collar break on the reverse...which was an interesting coin, but there was no premium attached to it.

Edited to say the coin was broadstruck...not a partial collar. image

I remember seeing an off-center PCGS XF45 Barber Half a few months ago. Went for crazy moon money. I would have loved to have had it. That is the only Barber Half error I have ever seen.

Craig, here is a Barber error coin for you to enjoy. The most spectacular error Barber half in existance. Even included in David lawrence's "Complete Guide to Barber Half Dollars". A full brockage S-mint Barber Half. The seller is asking $50,000

That full brockage is cool! I don't know if it's $50,000 cool, but it's cool.

Obviously, this is not a Barber, but this will demonstrate what a CUD is. A cud goes through a few phases. A cud happens when a die crack forms from the rim and goes back to the rim. At this point, it is called a retained cud.

This coin shows the start of a cud.

    image

At this point we have a retained cud, because the cracks go from rim to rim.

    image

Eventually, the piece of the die within the crack will start to lift away from the die creating a shift in the plane. You can see on this coin, how the field is a little bit higher than the rest of the fields inside of our retained cud.

    image

And here, we have where the piece of the die has completely fallen away from the die, and now we end up with a blank raised spot on the coin. We have now arrived at a cud.
