Cleaned coins?

I don't mind a lightly cleaned coin. even one that has been cleaned and retoned. How many others feel the same way I do?

If it's a VAM I need, I don't care if it's AT,NT,cleaned or looks like it has been used as a coaster for a streetcar. As long as it isn't counterfiet.

Well if you can get it slabbed by PCGS, NGC or ANACS without getting a cleaned moniker on the label, it is good enough for me.

I think the use of the word "like" in your poll is going to dictate the responses you get. If you say this "I will only settle with cleaned coins on very rare varieties" instead of "I only like cleaned coins on very rare varieties" I would have voted that option.

If you buy cleaned coins, make sure they are appropriately discounted by the seller. Otherwise, you are overpaying.

With morgans, I try to avoid having any cleaned examples in my collection- although I am sure that at least a few of the PL examples have been dipped at some point in their past. With bust halves, I try to pick up examples that look pretty original. I like dark and crusty toning and abhore the bright white examples commonly seen...

I like the way original coins look, but I don't mind the cleaned and toned coins though.

Those answers do not fit the bill for me. I would love to have an original coin any day of the week over a cleaned coin. Sometimes the cleaning makes it affordable.

I strongly prefer original coins. Here and there it is nearly impossible to get a truly original one without paying outrageously. A good example is a choice AU Trade Dollar. My current coin was lightly cleaned about a million years ago and has since toned over in rich and pleasant colors, I'm guessing from a long time spent in a Kraft envelope or something similar. While it is not the coin of my dreams, I have looked at more than 100 choice AU Trade Dollars in the last two years or so, and I like this one better than all but two that I have seen, neither one of which was offered for sale. So -- turn it in the light and there are hairlines on those partially P/L surfaces, but all in all it is a pretty acceptable coin, which, by the way, used to be in an AU55 slab with no cleaning noted. That's how it goes sometimes. Seated dollars are pretty much the same story.
