Here's a wow coin on eBay...

HERE

Cleaned or not, that is one beautiful coin. You can see the die cracks from 5 feet away. I might have to "nuke-bid" this one. I wonder if the sellers "grand pa" knows his collection is getting sold on eBay? Look at some of the other things this seller has sold. Wow, I would have liked the whole collection.

Edit: I shouldn't post before my first morning coffee

Look at the feedback the seller left to superior. (Sorry, not related to the coin.)

But that is a very nice looking half, albeit cleaned.

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

    Just lokking a little deeper...

Not even related to this seller but look at Superior's feedback from pqdollars and then check the auctions. I doubt these transactions closed at those prices. The first one I looked at was a ms65 1890 $ that "sold" for $100. GS is $1500. Another reason to distrust eBay and their feedback system.

i don't trust those digi-pics 1 bit, nor do i trust this seller. every 1 of his or her digi-pics looks like it was taken at a deceptive angle. couple that w/ a no-return policy, is SIGHT-UNSEEN, & that spells a recipe for disaster.

    don't be a fool, PASS

  • The description scares me away...they guarantee its genuine but all sales are final? Not much of a guarantee if you ask me.

Yeah that guarantee is flaky rhetoric. Have to hand it to the seller though, one of the few who had it in them to rip superior in the feedback. The wimps who did neutrals or yielded to the pressure to withdraw their negatives disgust me.

I agree that the coin looks whizzed -but really needs to be seen in hand. Has anyone here bought from this seller? She seems to have a lot of very desireable coins. The "all sales are final" thing scares me away. Bob

  • Interesting .
So what's the deal with Superior? They auction something, and if it doesn't bring enough money, they won't honor the final auction bid and ship the coin?
How can they do that and not get booted from Ebay?

I would be interested in hearing from Forum members who have purchased coins from this seller. This person claims to be liquidating her (?) Grandpa's coin collection. She has been doing so on ebay for a few years now (!). All of grandpa's coins seem to be high sharpness but cleaned, cleverly repaired, etc.

Never a return privilege, coins seemingly cleverly photographed, etc...

Has anyone bought coins from this seller? What's the scoop?

Ray - Superior has done this several times already. They Bin the items way too low. Most people realize that it is a mistake and let them off the hook. There are threads related to this happening. Bob

That's it in a nutshell. Someone there did recurrent and insane buy it now prices of a buck or so on key dates and they failed to deliver saying it was an incorrect lot description. I could see it as one episode, but it happened again and again as if they figured that it was no big deal to just not deliver the coin, refund the money and send out periodic failure to pay notices. Why they don't get booted for running bad auctions while folks like Legend get it for not supplying personal information is beyond me. Well, no it isn't; they make money for eBay with their live auction connection.

  • I am always wary of sellers who open their descriptions with references to the collection belonging to another relative. There appears to be a psychological game that removes the seller from responsiblility for the condition of an item in the event it is challenged. This must have been one heck of a collection for her to have been selling it for nearly four years now. I would run the other way.

Looks whizzed, which would be too bad. If it were "merely" cleaned, a few decades in proper storage could help it retone nicely and make it a nice -- and maybe even "market acceptable" -- coin.

But if it's whizzed, it's ruined forever, and no amount of natural retoning will help it.
  • Well, what is there to ensure the coin is not a counterfiet or fake?
Everytime I see that a relative is involved type of thing, it always seems to be a scam in the works.

I've asked a question of the seller:

    Hello --

In the description of this item, you say 'All coins are guaranteed genuine.' After that you state that 'all sales are final.' Which is it? What recourse is there if the coin is later determined by a reputable source to be NOT genuine? Is there a guarantee or is the sale final?
  • I looked at her most recently sold auctions. very nice older coins, majority seem pretty happy with their purchases? That neg. from Superior should be a badge of honor lol.

Yes, it does look interesting, but a little whizzed.

Wilmingtoncoins has never received a neg from a buyer and he lists in his credentials that he is a former NGC grader, so while I'm not impressed with his ability to evaluate coin pictures, I'm pretty certain that he is right on in evaluating the coins once they arrived.

Yep, "Dad's collection", "Grandpa's collection", and the often seen "Recently aquired estate" are just red flags in my book.

For what it's worth, I got a reply to my question about "all sales are final" and guarantees of authenticity:

Hi, all coins are guaranteed genuine or full return privilege. This is the only reason for a refund. Thanks.
