A weird night on Ebay... some got away and some didn't.

Trying to guesstimate what things will sell for is about as reliable as tarot cards and lottery numbers.
Greg (gmarguli) had a whole bunch of gorgeous material on Ebay ending tonight. There were two that I really wanted, and ended up going 1 for 2.
I tried manual snipes on a couple German minors, but was blown past quite convincingly on all of them.
I really wanted this first one. It is a stunning example for the type, pop 3/0. After checking previous Ebay auctions, Teletrade, coinarchives.com, and Heritage, I placed a bid of $458 against a Krause value of $325. I figured that was a strong bid, since virtually all the auction results I had seen were lower. Not so much. Ended up being the underbidder.

In comparison, this one ended up selling for $546 against a Krause value of $700. Too hairlined for people's tastes? It's not a type I was looking for at the moment so I didn't enter the bidding fray.

I briefly thought about bidding on this next one, because IMO it is very attractive, but it ended up at $430, roughly 3x Krause.

It wasn't all losers though.
This one was a spur-of-the moment manual snipe. I ended up paying roughly 2x Krause UNC for it. Love the coloring, and I've always wanted an example of coin where the obverse and reverse were different sizes...

And lastly...
This was the piece I wanted the most. By my standards it's modern crap
, and a restrike at that, but dang is it gorgeous! Both in design and grade. Paid $180 against a Krause value of $100. I actually expected it to go higher...

I love the color of the 20.
Someone should tell Krause that 1833 ceased to be an easy date about a couple of decades ago.
Shame for the zeppelin, congrats on the other two.
