I might retire, he's been around forever. They did get destroyed by Det and Leyland.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

Good riddance to the overrated man.

Bring in a fiery voice, a manager who will actually stand up for his players instead of letting them get run through by the press the way torre's allows his players to get beat up by the media.

<< <i>Good riddance to the overrated man. >>

Just look at his record before he came to the Yankees. He was terrible, but when you have players who can play then he is all of a sudden a HOF(?) manager and wins. He stinks.
  • Coaches are only as good as the players he has around them.

Not true. A manager/coach can make a world of difference, that's been proven time and time again in every league.

  • A year too late if you ask me.

I stated last year on the Sports Talk boards, Torre was a lump just sitting there, filling time between his plates of Calamari and Fusilli.

The guy was useless in my opinion.

I thought they should have given Stottlemeyer a shot last year.

I don't think they would have fared any worse this season.

A manager can make a huge difference, just look at Leyland in Detroit. However, any manager that is not a total hard-ass every single day will lose effectiveness over time, and it's tough for a manager to keep that fire lit under them constantly. Most managerial changes are for the better for all involved.

I have never thought of Torre as a good manager. He stunk as Mets manager for 5 years, then took over a good Atlanta team and after one year, they started going downhill. He wasn't worth a darn in St. Louis for the 6 seasons he spent there. And then he waltzes into the NY job and was handed a team of talented players who would have won no matter who managed them. It's not like he took over the Yankees after they had just finished in last place... they were the wild card team the season earlier under Showalter, they finished first the year before that, and second the year before that - and if there had been a wildcard format in '93, they would have had it then too.

I love how you guys try and re-write history. The 1996 team was HARDLY a team full of stars and certainly was not the highest paid team in baseball. Torre did a great job with that team that won 4 World Series.

I do not expect fans of teams who almost never win to have any dignity at all when it finally does happen.

If Torre goes, I would love to see Paul O'Neil manage the team. He would bring intensity thats for sure.

  • Its about time... He should have been gone last year. He is not a great manager nor will he ever be.

I am not sure about Pinella coming in, but that seems to be the concensus as to who will replace him.
  • What about Mattingly?

He'd get them going for sure.

You guys know more than I on the Torre issue.

But, 4 WS in 10 or 11 yrs?

    That's not top shabby.

And bare in mind, many other ball clubs spend serious money on payroll.

  • I think it would be great to give Lou Pinella a shot. I personally think Joe Torre should stay however, Lou Pinella is a top notch canidate that I would love to follow. He deserves his chance to manage the Yankees.

yeah, whatever ..... taking pot shots at Joe Torre after what he is done amounts to the same thing you talk about Yankee fans doing. Please, make me fall asleep faster image

  • I didn't mean managers can't make a difference at all. They definitely have an impact but Torre wasn't faring that well anywhere until he came to the Yankees. Now he's considered a good/great manager? That is due to the fact he had superior players around him to make him great and make his job easier with the Yankees. I understand there are always exceptions to the rule and there always will be in sports with teams having that special season but great managers still need great players to win and be good consistently. And the Tigers obviously have a great manager and a bunch of great players too. Don't forget that.

Where have you guys been? Pinella made it clear on his last job that the only reason he took it was to be close to his home and family. I do not see NY in his future. As for Axtell's comment on Torre, Who made him mother of the players? Does he wipe their arss for them too?? With the money those guys are making, they deserve what they get from the press. And i have enjoyed all of the bashing so far!!
  • Exactly....Bob Uecker could have managed those teams and done just as well. Torre's record elsewhere proves his managerial skill.

  • wow, yankee fans must be really hurting not to jump in on this one in support of Torre. I am a born bosox fan but have to appreciate what he's done with a certified nut for a boss (The Boss) and expectations that allow only for winning it all. That team simply didn't have the pitching _ and hasn't since Pettite left. This year's squad was a bit like the red sox of 2004 (who had better pitching) -- capable of getting taken out early or getting on a roll and going all the way. The '06 Yanks ran into a couple of hot pitchers, maybe got a little impatient offensively, and now find themselves out.
Torre, however, will be a HOF manager who was also a pretty damn good player.
    Love his 64 Giants card.

Yet another example of the local media jumping too hard and too fast on a story before it came to fruition, in this case The Daily News. Even in todays' Newsday, it was reported that Torre's firing was iminent and that George was only holding off because he didn't want to be seen as being impulsive in firing Joe. Maybe Rudy Giuliani convinced George to keep him with that appeal he made yesterday. Anyway, it's hard not to like Joe, even if you're not a Yankee fan.

    This is like the Braves.

But, the Yanks have been even more successful.

One hell of a team - anything can happen in a 5 games series.

Now, I have to say - the Tigers played like they were somebody tonite!!!!
