Are restocking fees allowed under eBay rules? I always thought they were not and yet I seem to be seeing these more and more lately.

just another kind of profit center like overcharging for postage.

Hire someone to a full time position, pay their wages, match their with holdings, pay workman's comp insurance, unemploymnet insurance, buy shipping lables (we shipped over 5000 last year @ 16.99 per 250), bubble wrap, boxes, peanuts, and then you'll have an understanding of shipping charges.
To make a long story short I took in 22,000 in shipping last year and payed out over 32,000 in shipping charges and materials.....we won't even go into wages.....

Personally, I also avoid auctions that have restocking fee's and ridiculous shipping charges unless the coin or item is worth the costs associated with it.

Although I try not to sell on Ebay anymore your statement has little thought behind it. Listing fees and end of auction fees on will eat you alive on every returned coin, especially when they go over the $500 amount. There are people who will take advantage of this on ebay and will buy coins looking for a score(potential undergrades and cherry picks) if it's not a score they send it back.
The reason I wanted to get away from Ebay is people who really appreciate quality and eye appeal aren't there...(save for a few)

If someone doesn't like an item they should have the right to return it. I've sold many things on ebay with no "re-stocking" fee
(of course I am just a one person operation

Actually, ebay is about making money. Whether it be an auction, approval sale or buy-it-now, ebay is about making money and sellers who choose ebay are free to choose the selling paradigm that suits them best. So, if someone wants to include a restocking fee then they should be aware that droves of potential buyers will abandon them, which is entirely proper since the auction format of ebay is unlike the auction format of typical coin auctions where people have the opportunity to view every lot in-hand before committing to bid. Sellers should understand this, unfortunately, many sellers do not.

I think if you buy it from the ebay store then you should have the right to return...but the idea of auction is really more as is...done deal

Where are you buying labels at $17/250? This is what bulk is for. Then again, I've done plenty of work for a company that pays full wages to two shippers, and somehow doesn't get behind. And yes, restocking fees are a joke.

Often, the buyers who are chased off are the better Ebay-educated ones. Sadly, the unsophisticated and the greedy will most often fall prey. In that case, why should a less-than-scrupulous seller care?

If its returned, the seller has every right to get some Ebay fees back. Nothing wrong with this, if you dont like it then move on.
these started at a penny and ended at seventy four dollars and twenty five cents. If the buyer doesn't want them...
I'll be more than happy to buy them back at that price. No Problem.

Ebay has rules? I think I'm holding my sides here.

EXACTLY!
Another thought ..can a money order be verified as legit before cashing the money order ?
"10% restocking fee on PCGS slabs, but limited to a $20 maximum restock.fee"
I think that is reasonable. It's only when the Bigbux item gets returned with an unlimited restocking fee, that I move on to the next auction.

In your case, I would not have accepted a return or would have negged the guy if he refused to pay. If he profits from reselling the coin, good for him. But your inventory cannot be his inventory until the transaction is completed.
