Why is the half dime mounted upside down in the holder? image

Who knows. And the half dime really isn't part of the set. It was picked up later and added to the others so the set would be "complete". When the KOS set was discovered back in the late 1950's the half dime was missing. The one in it now was added before the set went on display at the Mandelay Bay Casino.

That sounds like it is probably the reason. Thanks.

I remember viewing the King of Siam set when the Goldbergs had it on display. They let me closely examine the 1804 dollar .... at the time my thoughts were it was a very nice coin, bright and flashy with what appeared to be slight scratching around an old spot in the left obverse field.

The next time I saw the coin on display [after the sale of the set], it appeared to be very dark. Perhaps it was the different lighting? image
