Opinions on this medieval one?

Got this from a bid board in Tucson, AZ. It was identified as being from Beçanson, of course though I have no clue! I just like the portrait.

The image just looked flat and washed out in color, so I reduced it to black and white--shows more detail. Awesome effects in what's left of the legends. image

That certainly looks like the Besançon coat of arms (a German eagle pinned behind two Spanish pillars), and they always placed on the obverse a portrait of Emperor Charles V (CAROLVS.V.IMPERATOR) in honour of him giving them the mint right back in the 1500's. There aren't any coins listed in Krause before 1622, and I can't see that date being anything other than 1613, but it still fits as likely a Besançon coin.

Though it's listed under "German States" in Krause, the city is now in France, near the Swiss border.

    Neat find. image
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.

Apparently I have been awarded one DPOTD. B)
