How about Master Team Sets?

Being a team set collector and zeroing in on completing my 61 Pirates set I looked at the set I put together when I was in High School and noticed I had included a 61 Post Card of Wilmer Mizell. The reason, Topps didn't include him in the 61 Topps set. Mizell was 12-5 and won 2 games in the World Series so you can see why I would want him in my set. This made me think what about all those years where Topps and Bowman had exclusive contracts, putting a true team set from those years would require having cards from 2 different companies not just one. The solution to me was to add a Master Team Set to the registry that would work one of two ways, either it includes all cards made from all manufacturers or one card of each player and it is his most popular card that gets in the set. I think the first way is easiest and less hassel but there is something to building a team set consisting of one card of each player and having no dupes. Anyone else like the idea of having Master Team Sets?

Unless you are going to get multiple people collecting team sets the same way that you do - why not just put it as such in the Collector's Showcase?

I have a lot of my Phillies cards there that do not conform to a year/brand style of collecting.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

When PSA started the mega sets, I thought the next step would be mega team sets. I would be in for a Pirates run. Heck, I'm already working on it.

I currently have mine in a collector's showcase (check out the link in my sig line), but it is almost impossible to keep the cards in chronological order or organized in any way if you are constantly adding to the set.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

That is my thought as well. The one thing I keep going back too is that if I want a complete set of a team most of the time in the 50's and 60's not all players were included in the Topps or Bowman's sets. To get all the players I would have to include Topps, Bowman, Post, Team Issues etc. The 1961 Wilmer Mizell is just my example but what about Topps only Cardinal's team sets of the 50's without a Stan Musial, doesn't seem like much of a team set. The same thing for that team from New York that must go nameless.

  • I am all for Mega Team Sets--------I am building The Washington Senators set, 1933 to 1971 which includes Topps, Topps Giants, Bowman, Goudey, Diamond Stars, Playball, Fleer, and Kellogg. I am extremely into this set and would like very much that MR JOE ORLANDO ask me about it, or you guys, in hopes that we may get this on the Registry. I am a Washington Senators lifetime fan, and I can see others with thrir passions for their own teams really getting into this.

  • The Team Set registry is slowly gaining popularity. I think the idea of a TEAM MEGA sets is a good one.

Would it be better to have the mega sets separated by brand? For example, all regular issue Topps from all years for a team as a mega set then all years Bowman for another mega set?

The Collector's Showcase could be use for ALL brands and types (inserts, autographed, parallels, etc)

I also wish PSA would allow other brands for the regular teams sets like Donruss, Fleer, etc.

  • Neat web site Creepercat!!!!!!!I could listen to more discussion on your idea of a Topps only type. But what about the many players which wouldn't be there on a Topps card. For example, in 1963, Tom Cheney, an integral part of the Senators that year was on a Fleer card and not Topps. Some others will evidence themselves as such, and these are reasons for wanting to include an important player otherwise absent.

I too wish we were allowed to have other than Topps and Bowman Team sets. Beautiful cards such as Donruss 1984 and 1985 are huge reasons to have team sets for those years. Two of the most popular years for baseball cards in the 80's I would bet!!!!!!!

We need to set up a groundswell for the idea of a Master Team Set (all cards issued for a team that year) and Mega Team Sets (all cards issued of a team regardless of manufacturer). I would also suggest that we could even have Mega Team Sets broken down by decades or World Series teams etc. It is an exciting development for a team collector to be able to have multiple ways to collect a team rather than the rigid format we are currently offered. I hope other people join me in trying to get PSA to offer more choices for the team collector.

  • My vote is for:

Mega Team Sets by Brand - for example, all Topps regular issues from all years.

The only people that will collect decade sets will be the same team collectors doing yearly and master sets. It would be redundant in my opinion.

I think the all brands and/or special inserts should be put in the Collector's Showcase for the same reason that I gave for the decade sets.

  • A full run of one brand would be easier for PSA and us to manage, for sure. Makes sense. Also, that could demonstrate the strength of a set like yours. I would feel good about a Topps only run of Washington Senators and Texas Rangers-

Washington Senators --- Topps-- 1951 through 1971------------ just the mainstream Topps cards------- no 1964 Topps Giants for instance.

Texas Rangers--- ----------Topps--1972 to 2006-----------mainstream Topps------ no 1975 minis for example.

Traded cards would be included of course.

A run of another brand would be ok-----------all cards, all years, for the team. For example---- Goudey Washington Senators would include all Senators cards from 1933, 1934, 1935, 1938, and 1941.

  • Tony,

My initial thought is that you should put the Senators and the Rangers in the same set. After giving it further thought, it would probably be best to separate them since they actually relocated. There may be some collectors now or in the future that would like to collect just the Senators. I agree with the mainstream stuff though (no minis, no Giants, no modern inserts, etc).

In my case, the Angels have changed location names several times but have only moved once. What would you call an Angels Mega Team set? image

  • In a real sense--- Team sets builders are the gold dust of the hobby. The heart and soul! We will always be here and cost is not as important to us. Expensive to build team sets -- hell yes. Especially the Senators and the Rangers. Anybody else feel this way? MASTER TEAM SETS and/or MEGA TEAM SETS are just around the corner. Have you seen how big some of those PLAYER SETS have gotten? Pretty scary if you ask me!!!!!!!! Tony

I dont know if this would apply here, but I got the following email back from Cosetta regarding an key card set that I was thinking about requesting. It would have consisted of Auto'd cards of the players that have caught TD from Brett Favre. Here is the reply that I got.

"Unfortunately, this is not the type of set that we would compile onto
the regular Registry. We are not loading sets where a member can add any
card of a specific player, which would require endless spec # updates.
This type of specialty set is perfect for the Collectors Showcase
    section of the Registry."

I assume that if you designate each card for the set they will allow you to have it listed. If the card choice is open then they wont add them anymore. Good thing the HOF-Auto's sets are already in place.

I have not followed up on this yet. Not sure if I will or wont.

  • What sets, other than the team sets, would qualify for the Mega-Sets registry? I am just wondering what PSA intent is with these.

The three registries that currently exist feature the same collectors (with AMAZING collections). Is this supposed to be the "HIGH STAKES" area like in the casinos?

It seems very simple to me that team collectors should have the same set collecting options as set or player collectors do. I would love the challenge of completing a master 1961 Pirates team set or Mega Pirates Team set, but I do think breaking thing's down into decades would encourage more collectors (I.E., I don't want to collect modern cards, sorry).

Dont expect them any time soon. PSA wont even add OPC, Donruss, or Fleer team sets right now. I have requested all 3 and received the " perfect for collectors showcase " mumbo jumbo.

Congrats on the all the PSA 10 team sets. Team set collectors know how hard this is and how long it takes.

Yes congrats, all 10 sets in any year are tough. PSA's stance about OPC, Donruss and Fleer sets is absurd. I would rather see collector's showcase sets be eliminated all together if they start lumping all set's they feel are not worthy of their attention into them. It is an easy out for them to not do any work. Again, team set collectors are given the shaft. If someone wants to put together a Jose Lind or Pascual Perez basic and master player set there is no problems but if I want to put together a 1981 Donruss Pirates Team set, sorry tough luck. I bet if Fogel or another big time collector requested it there would be no questions asked. I wish we could do polls here because I would like to know how many collectors here actually collect team sets? It appears PSA doesn't think that team set collectors are that important.

  • TEAM COLLECTORS------- Thank you for the nice words----- I don't brag much---- but, yes, team sets are very difficult and EXPENSIVE!!!!! All the GRADING fees, and shipping costs---------wow... We are a dedicated bunch for sure! I don't think there is anything wrong with the this type of loyalty. And, I do believe that our requests will be acted on soon, because of the $$$$$$ amounts we spend to build these sets. We don't do this for any kind of profit--- in my case --Senators and Texas Rangers--- low end when it comes to investment potential. Supreme loyalty to a favorite team, so when I imagine where this should end up, I believe MEGA TEAM SETS,,,,,,,,, FRANCHISE MEGA SETS,,,,,,,,,TEAM MASTER SETS,,,, or at least allow us to Register team sets other than just TOPPS. Look at the other sports team sets------- bet they have OPC, Fleer, etc....OH !! , and the Player sets--- anybody that has ever put on a baseball glove, football uni, hockey skates ,, etc--- can have a REGISTRY PLAYER SET in his name.

    KEEP SMILING-------------------TONY

  • When PSA Registry puts MEGA TEAM SETS on line, how will you team set builders want your sets to look? The first iteration will likely be full run Topps, from franchise start to the present. For example the Texas Rangers began operations in 1972----- so---- 1972 Topps through 2006 Topps team sets would require 1118 different PSA graded cards. Having 880 so far in an average grade of ****9.357**** (382 PSA'S 10; 433 PSA'S 9; 62 PSA'S 8 and 3 PSA'S 7), my MEGA TEAM SET is at 78.7 % completion.

----- Collecting these single year sets is fun and rewarding, however, the ultimate thrill will be when PSA enters this full run MEGA TEAM SET on the Registry.

There are indeed other scenarios which could include 25 YEAR SILVER sets, 50 YEAR GOLDEN sets. Additionally, MEGA TEAM SETS by decade are feasable, for example-- 1951 -1959 Topps Pittsburgh Pirates,,, 1961 - 1969 Topps LA Angels,,, 1971- 1979 Topps Milwaukee Brewers,,, etc.image;image Tony/Rangerman/DFCVNAM
