Early Donruss Elite

Anyone know odds of pulling these? In wax and rack and cello, or just wax? Series I, Series II? Any help would be appreciated!

Nope, but I always wanted one...or two!
  • I have probaly opened nearly a case of that product and not pulled one. I think the official odds were one or 2 per case.

I dont remember but I opened nearly a case between my own boxes and those for the card shop that I worked at in the early 90's. I pulled a Sandberg auto in one of my personal boxes. I thought they were hard to come by back in the day. Now when I have checked on Ebay I dont have a problem find the regular ones on there. The Sandberg (auto) and the Ryan (next lowest in #) I havent seen much of. Remember there were 3 tiers of Elites. Sandberg (#ed to 5000 I think), Ryan (no auto)(#ed to 10,000) then all the others not numbered.

  • Never opened close to a case, but as a young kid, I would have KILLED to pull an Elite card, more so than a refractor as I tore threw probably atleast 200 packs of that stuff. I remember pulling an Elite card in 1996; a Paul O'Neill numbered to 10,000. I was thrilled.

I remember i pulled a Roberto alomar. 1994 Donruss i think, that card was by far and away the best pull i had back in my big pack ripping days, (i was like 10 at the time).

I think for the 1991 Donruss they were about one every two or three cases. I got a Juan Gonzalez at one point that I thought would be worth millions by now, as he approached his HOF induction...

I was actually thinking about going for an Elite set run (at least the first few years) along with Diamond Kings (at least up to 1995 or so), seeing as how it's mostly a buyer's market now. About how much would a good price be for each complete set of Elites (if any were to show up on Ebay)?

I think they were one per case in 91 and 92. Considering there were 400 trajillion cases produced, that's why there are so many on the market today. But at $25 a box back then, the $100+ price per seemed reasonable. I remember everyone and there brother busting box after box of the 92's trying to pull a Ripken auto here in Baltimore.

  • I pulled two Rickey Henderson's #'d/10,000 that were stuck together in the same pack. really thin cards.

I also traded a friend for a Tony Gwynn #'d/10,000 and a Will Clark #'d/10,000.

at the time, they booked for $120-$200 each. i think i sold them when they were booking around $30 or $40.
  • they were in both series 1's and 2's....1 every 2 -3 cases as stated above.

They were a great hit when pulled back then...baseball were harder to pull then hockey...but by 94-95 they were all pretty much 1-2 per case.

I got a few hanging around..I'll try to get up...

In like 1993 or 1994 I hit a 1992 Will Clark Elite in a box of donruss from Big Lots. That was one of the few places to get any cards and I opened tons of 1990 Donruss that was $3.99 or $4.99 a box and Donruss that was $6.99 a box. I loved opening those boxes back then. I spent big money on a $12.99 or so box of 1994 UD Coll. Choice and hit a Manny Ramirez Gold Sig. and thought it was the best card ever. I think I traded it for an Eddie Murray rookie right when he was hitting 500 HR. Ah the memories.....
